I made some tiles.
Personally I think the sudden black outline looks off, especially since there is none between grass and dirt. I'd rather have coloured lines here or at least outline the bottom side of the grass, too.
I disagree, I like that outline style. It is pretty much a matter of personal taste. I think it looks fine, as long as everything it fitted to conformed to the style.
I agree more with Hoeloe, but I'd like to see how it looks using Previous' suggestion, too.

it looks better with the colored outline. i also changed some of the tiles.

made a mock-up testing the tiles
I'd place Enribeaver on top of the grass, because now it looks like he's floating behind the ground.
I agree with Jetaku, gives a sense of depth.

I think the darkest shades of green and brown could be darker. The far hand appears a tad too small and he lacks a moustache.
Also anti-aliasing on eyebrows and mouth.

this is a detail people tend to miss, but gilbert is wide. you may want to make him at least 5 more pixels wider
I initially made him wide, but it looked odd. I guess I shall go back to that point

I stretched him by three pixels. Is this better?
now his head doesn't look like the beautiful dome shape, either smooth the front of his head or stiffen the back.

I also made something else. (the jump probably wont be that short.)
Looks like a character select animation for when the selection arrow points to him :>

I think Gilbert's head is overshaded and the lightsource is too far down.
