Notes: (updates are bolded)
-Reformatted for width, as to have the player cards fit below it.
-Skewed format is simply a personal flavor, but it works just as fine as a proper rectangle.
-First and Third rows are starting characters.
-Second and Fourth rows are secret characters.
-Original and Melee secret characters still retain their status as secret characters. (This is no longer fully accurate.)
-Third-party characters are not starting characters.
-Geno moved to Mario section because it seemed to fit better.
-Lucario promoted to starting character as Mewtwo is making a return.
-Fox remains the single starting character for his game series.
-Masked Man made a starting character because it seemed a bit odd to have both villains as secret characters. Decided to have group the different pairs of characters together. (Return him to secret character under the argument that both Ness and Lucas are expected by now.)
-Made Captain Falcon and Marth starting characters, as they're well expected by now.
-Villager, Ray MK.III, and Saki switched to secret characters.
-Issac also switch to a secret character, but moved into a different section as to not be mistaken as a Fire Emblem character.
-Made Snake and Sonic starting characters, as the wow-effect they had in Brawl wouldn't pass over to this game.
-Moved Travis because he didn't feel right being in the bottom corner.

The Villager should definately be a starter. Take out Sukapon, he's more fitting for a secret character.
I'll see what the others have to say before undoing Villager.

Also, I'd like to know what format people would prefer: A normal rectangle or this skewed format?
I'd prefer a normal rectangle. Also I agree on the Villager Sukapon switch
All I can say....is yay! XD
I'll stomach Travis =)
I'm fine either way with Villager/Sukapon.
Here is what both would look like on the 640x480 resolution.

Hmmm, I really dislike how the series aren't divided in neither horizontal or vertical lines, I tried to give a shot at fixing it:

Black are regular characters, Pink are unlockable characters

In order to fit, I put Lucario as a secret character, and Saki/Isa as a regular, because Saki was one of the first Assist Trophies to be revealed, and Sin & Punishment 2 is coming to the US and all.

My idea for the starting roster. Though I doubt it matters.

Original 8 are there, obviously

From there, I just decided one character from each of the starting franchises. Peach, Diddy, Zelda, Meta Knight, and Pokemon Trainer.

I chose Krystal as Star Fox's unlockable, because she's a completely new character. She's one of three new characters added to my roster. Falco didn't make much sense to me, since he's essentially Fox's Luigi.

I added Pit under Samus, since both Metroid and Kid Icarus share the same development team. And I wanted Ridley locked. Wario's added under Yoshi because of his Mario Sub-franchise status.

Then, I threw a Mother Rep, a Fire Emblem rep, and Captain Falcon. Along with that, Little Mac and Starfy...who were two of the First Party Characters we decided to choose from the very beginning. Added Ice Climbers too.

Who I removed?

Bowser - I was going to add him under Peach, and that's probably what I should've done. However, keeping Bowser and all the other villain characters locked could be an interesting idea. We could use it for the Adventure Mode, perhaps?

Dedede - He probably should've been locked in Brawl. Having the three Kirby characters unlocked at the start just didn't seem right. Again, we could also use this for Adventure Mode, with all the villains locked.

Olimar - Another one I expected to be locked in Brawl. Olimar's unique fighting style is probably worth more if you unlock him, rather than starting with the Space Man.

Starting roster would be 22, but there'd be a shitload of unlockables.

IDK I thought this was a good idea don't shoot me =(
I think I like Ark's starting roster the most. Having a ton of unlockables will keep people busy and striving to find that last locked character.
Brawl had 23 starting. Why do we only have 22?
We already have many unlockables, half the roster are already made of unlockables. Why would we take out Brawl starters?
Exactly. I think Ekoi's is the way to go.

Add Sonic, Snake, or both and we should be straight b(Genki ^_^)d
Pretty sure Brawl had 21. And this has 22. It's generally a small number when you compare the starting roster of each game and how it progressed, seeing how each installment had more then half, or close to it, of the roster already unlocked. I still like it.
