It's generally a small number when you compare the starting roster of each game and how it progressed, seeing how each installment had more then half, or close to it, of the roster already unlocked. I still like it.
Yeah it was 21 I just checked. My mistake, I was counting Sonic and Snake because they weren't really secret and I forgot they had to be unlocked. But based off of Ark's, I have this to say.

We should at least have around half. Bowser is a staple of Nintendo. He's the biggest bad guy to the biggest good guy. I'm fine with Dedede, but Olimar being unlockable doesn't really make sense to me. He's popular, so people might want him form the start. I don't see any reason for him to be unlockable. But I'd like another Pokemon (Lucario probably), so with Bowser it's an even 3-3 start-unlock for the franchises with 6 reps.Villager should probably start, too, since AC one of the most prominent recent series. Lucas should start, too. Why should 4-rep series like DK, StarFox, or Kirby get 2 starting while Mother only gets 1? Those 4 are all on the same level. I'd also say Sonic and Snake because it won't be much of a shock to unlock them.

So my idea for a starting list would be
Ark's post, Bowser, Lucario, Villager, Lucas, Sonic, and Snake. 28. If we want to make it even 30 start - 30 unlock, then I'd suggest Saki and Issac.
Fair enough.

But I have one things to say. And I hate to sound like a broken record, but I still don't like 3rd parties in the starting roster, no matter who it is. They don't really belong in the franchise since they aren't Nintendo and all, so to me it seems more appropriate that they have to be unlocked.
Still disagree. Everyone knows they'll be in.
I don't think it matters if they know or not, the discussions for the third party were long, tedious, and really annoying. People should have to work for the third party characters being included in this game.
The reason I locked Bowser in the first place was an idea that revolved around Adventure Mode. Otherwise, I can guarantee, he'd be on my list. He was starting in both Melee /and/ Brawl.

Olimar being locked is more because of his unique play style involving around Pikmin, rather than his popularity. Yes, he was unlocked in Brawl, but I can't help but feel he was only unlocked to generate more hype on the Dojo during a time of delays.

If Bowser was included in my selection, another Pokemon character would've appeared too. Which, yes, would've been Lucario. Since well, Jigglypuff is staple unlock. Mewtwo's a villain, and Deoxys is the "new guy".

The reason I didn't choose Lucas AND Ness was pretty much the reason I chose Krystal over Falco. Lucas and Ness are like the Mario Brothers, and both play similarly. In Soul Calibur, when it comes to the "clone"ish characters like Cassondra and Sophitia, at least one of them requires an unlock. We could use one of the villain characters...but then removing Bowser was kinda pointless. In the end, I just left it at Ness. Possibly because they are second tier franchises in the Smash Universe.

I didn't add any Third Parties to my list. Probably because out of all the characters, they /deserve/ to be hidden. Even in Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic and Snake were revealed months before the actual game came out, and they were still locked. (Oddly enough, Shadow Moses was a starting stage...This could possibly allow Mr. Snake in the starting roster.)

IDK IGNORE ARK HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.

That's a horrible reason. Everyone knew Luigi was in. Ganondorf, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff. The obvious returning characters.

See what I'm saying. So pretty much, what App said. Doesn't matter if they know or not. And from here, refer to my previous post.
Just to be clear, Mario and Luigi aren't even close to being clones :/

Fireball.
Triple A Combo (Might be a different animation, but it's the same effect.)
Neutral Air
Back Air
Up Smash
Down Smash (Different properties, same animation)
Up Air
Super Jump Punch (Again, Different properties, same animation)

Face the facts, bub. Luigi originated as a clone of Mario, and in Brawl, he's still a clone of Mario. Now he got a lot more shit added to him, yes. But you can't deviate too far from Mario when we're talking Luigi. Luigi is, and always will be, the Ken to Mario's Ryu.
You're forgetting throws, jumping and dodging animation are all the same.

But he's still really different.
Just because they have similarities in their move sets does not make them clones. Mario and Luigi play completely different from eachother (and not in a Ness/Lucas way). And Mario is terrible compared to Luigi Unsure (imo)
Remind me again why Geno of all people is in this game?
Popular demand and the fact that he's awesome (if I'm wrong, correct me)
