Toad, Toadette, and Gender
#61
There's been many times where a developer at Nintendo said something and was interpreted wrong anyway. There's translation issues and cultural differences too. I'm sure half of the things we're assuming they might mean is nothing what they meant.

You got to look at these games and apply Occam's razor.

"Did not go out of their way to do it" =/= "they are genderless".

Toad has been referred to as a "he" forever, pretty sure the creator/man in the article is just cracking some light humor to mess with people. This is coming from the same guy who says "they're not mushrooms" and then leads you up only for it to be "the greatest mystery". The point is that it's a technical "oh we didn't EXACTLY say X" joke and that they don't really care or even know themselves.

This topic really needed to be made?? It's a non-RPG Mario game, there is no sense of deepness or subliminal storyline. In fact... these are the exact sort of statements Nintendo tries to avoid a lot of the time because they're so overprotective over any sort of controversy. This topic has over-read itself right into oblivion on a much deeper issue that could be less mindlessly discussed somewhere else on the forum, rather than have it star the mushroom person.

You're right, I don't...

...demonstrable in-game elements do. Those are the only "constants" in this equation. I think, all being creators or creative minds of some kind here, we all understand saying "Oh, this is true about my character/universe" but later changing that decision? Until a statement has demonstrable effect in a published artifact depicting that universe, it can't be considered anything more than a malleable and idle thought passing through a creator's lips.

this is so deep. do you like ron paul?

I don't know how to respond to this in any other way than "Stepping into 21st century" =/= "sticking your hand in the fire on societal issues when it can be ignored by just... not doing so at all" (that is usually Nintendo's methods, by the way). You should have expected backlash over this, it's not a solid claim and more so just a joke.

Ugh, I apologize but the irony here is unacceptable.

If you're talking about Nintendo being serious and all that, you should make a topic when the next Mario game stars the third African American Mario Brother or something more solid than 2 lines of gag in a small interview.

And this is how we know that this topic is done. When one resorts to sarcastic hostility and complete lack of counter points, the subject has died out.

ok like
what the fuck

ignoring societal issues isnt just not good
its bad
if discussing actual legit issues with society is seen as "sticking your hand in the fire" and is discouraged then nothing will get done
sweeping these topics under the rug is a shit thing to do

fuck you

Nintendo does not have to force bisexual characters in their games to please an audience. It's not like they're shitting on them or anything.

Calm down.

and "did this thread need to be made" isnt hostile in any regard? that's amazingly biased

plus you cant really counter kriven's argument when its just so vague and sad and whiny and edgy
"everything is nintendo when you really think about it, man. peace love and mario."

no one said bisexual. no one said forced. the producer made some good remarks and now we must defend the straight nintendo canon!

Oh my god, this thread keeps going in circles.

There is no remarks at all, it's a creative/development fact that gender didn't come into planning very much because the game does not rely on that personal fact. You turned "lack of" into "purposeful removal of" gender, which I don't believe was the producer's intentions when answering at all.

If Nintendo is with it, there'd be controversy. If Nintendo is against it, there'd be controversy. If Nintendo doesn't do anything, no one cares. Option C is looking kinda right now, Nintendo is out to make money and not be on infamous debate sparking headlines leading the forefront of societal movements. I don't think they'll ever do anything like this for real, and I stand by the more believable claim of this being an interview joke.

I have nothing else to add to be honest, sorry if I have offended anyone possibly by my lack of feelings toward the matter.

Nobody here (that I've seen anyway) has an issue with Nintendo having an agender/whatever-the-pc-term-is character. Part of the problem is that it's kinda hard to trust the already ambiguous word of somebody speaking on behalf of a series as a whole when his involvement in the series is relatively minimal and recent.

IMO, He's not much more qualified to speak on the "canon" gender of Toad/Toadette than that one Nintendo employee a couple years back who claimed that the Zelda series had no timeline and that each game was instead a retelling of the same "legend".
Offending people is a necessary and healthy act... Every time you say something that's offensive to another person, you just caused a discussion. You just forced them to have to think. - Louis C.K.

i don't think if we're going to play captain toad in a few weeks toad is going to stop in the middle of gameplay, turn to the player and ask;

''what do you think that's inside these pants?''

so i really couldn't care, if they want to make a sexes and gender statement there's plenty of space and time for that and i would in fact be interested in that. just not so much in the game i'm playing for fun.

...my goodness, this thread.

You know how people say ignorance is bliss? Yeah, that's the approach I'll be taking for this "news" for my own sanity.

Also, if it ain't Miyamoto's word, I ain't buying it. Then again, Miyamoto did say that the Koopalings weren't Bowser's kids, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

EDIT: I'm also subscribing to the idea of this being one giant case of "lost in translation".

Wait what the fuck, how did I not remember this wasn't even Miyamoto's own word? Bah, I sure wasted my time with this one.

So if I've understood this correctly Toads play gender roles we can relate to, but since they are genderless they don't necessarily identify to these genders?
