Now for the eyes, as of this point he looks like he was born from Afghanistan and raised in Japan.

Sorry if this comes across as rude, but Sonic and Megaman are not "something different" for you.
I'm looking at your sprites and you're still using the same bad techniques as before.
The entire point of your challenge was to get you out of your comfort zone, which... you've fallen right back into.

Sprite something -entirely different- than Sonic or Megaman.
Something not mainstream, and that uses an entirely different spriting style.
Try making a custom sprite in the style of the DS game Lock's Quest. No robots! That means no spriting your ref.

That stuff in your first post (minus the megaman) is all different from what you normally do as well.
You should consider going back to that. (Actually, don't consider it, do it!!)

Yeah, gaia

I suggested you to make this thread exactly for you to try other things, not to make Sonic and Megaman over again. Try Viper's suggestion and I'll gladly help you from there.

Aside from that, well.. Blame my childhood, mine wasn't as colorful as everyone else's here, as nobody showed me nothing nobody knew about yet and I had a genesis and an NES, before I got a dreamcast and later consoles. I missed out much did I?

..This is gonna be difficult, or stick to writing. I seem to be a better writer than an artist. If only I knew about anime earlier (as in, pre-toonami) I would've been watching stuff nobody else knew about!

Sounds like a bunch of excuses

Considering that I came from a bad time, yeah. The origional purpose of this topic was to find a new method in spriting.. But in that case.. Yeah, yeah.

Gaia, we weren't lucky or blessed with good art references like you think. We basically had the same thing you had; a couple videogames. That's all.

Why are we not pidgeonholed like you, then? Because we didn't stick to ONLY ONE THING. Of course, you'll favor something you like (I spent a good part of my life spriting Marios in MFGG), but I realized that making the same thing over and over wouldn't make me better.

This is why I started to look on other things, learn other styles and proper anatomy. We weren't born with abilities. We had to acquire them. So don't come with those lame-ass excuses. Never.

I've been trying to show you how to sprite for a long time now, and while you've got a little better, you still aren't showing the development I'd like to see. Stop asking me for help every two pixels, have more self-criticism, study more. Art isn't something you can wing it and expect it to look right. As I told you uncountable times, STUDY ART, ANATOMY, EVERYTHING. Don't be afraid to try different things. Come on, the whole tSR sprite archive is in oyur hands, browse through them and pick a different style you like/relate with, and work from there.

It is always hard to get out from your comfort zone, but dammit, I've been pointing you the way all this time and It's kind of frustrating to see you fall in the same hole again.

I can't even begin to fathom what you're going on about

What you're talking about isn't even relevant nor does it matter

You're just looking for reasons to deflect criticism

Grow up

Stop looking for "methods" and "style" and all this other crap. Don't try to break art down to a science - you'll only fail. It's supposed to be about expression, and you should want to improve how you express yourself. You're stuck in the same loop as anyone who's ever come from the Sonic Spriting Community (speaking from experience here!!!).

You have the biggest resource at your fucking finger tips dude - it's called the internet. You want to be inspired? Go google something. You're old enough that you know what to look for and where to find it and where you want to go from there.

There's never a point in time where you'll be so old you'll never be able to be influenced by anything ever again. Try. Trying is hard. Doing something unfamiliar is hard. It's frustrating and it's annoying but the end result is almost always worth it.

wait what
Gaia,we've been friends for like what?About 2-3 years now, right? You're cool and all but sometimes you just come up with the most bullshit excuses ever,I mean, what does childhood even has to do with pixels..?
I sprite mostly Sonics and sometimes some RM inspired things,I kinda grew up with them too.But that really doesn't stop me from trying new things,it wouldn't even make any sense if it did stop me.I don't know shit about proper anatomy either, and I don't "study" art,but that doesn't mean I should stick with Sonics and Megamen forever (not that I do,for those who don't know me,heh).
You're way too selfbeating too man, people are just saying "Try new things" and you're going on about your childhood being "not colorful"and that you should stick to writing. That's nonsense, and I really don't know why you do that.
That stuff from the first post is cool, and I remember seeing many non RM stuff from you over the years too.You just have to keep that up.It's that simple.

Hey Gaia you should try spriting a Pokémon or a Kirby/Zelda series character to start. Heck maybe even Digimon it doesn't really matter. Just try that and see how it works out!

I managed to piss off a ton of people, did I? welp, I did it again, but did I really felt that demotivated? First, my real plan is to stop making up excuses and doing what gors said, and continue my 'experiments' a little more. Second is to once and for all stop spriting sonic/mega man and try other things, now that I know there were people in my position, only worse (..Though it would've been probably worse if someone like MRSKELETON stepped up to the plate). Last is to try to patch the pigeonhole so I'll never fall in again.

Eh,you don't really need to stop making Sonics and Megamans FOREVER if you like the characters.
You just need to try new things, and there are infinite ways of spriting a character.Look at CBL's topic for example, they're Sonics, but they're far from Genesis style.

Like Mega Man and Sonic? Come up with your own platform hero. Someone fast like Sonic, but can shoot lasers like Mega Man.

Go ahead. Even I was inspired to make my own characters inspired from things I love.

So guys, I need an idea.

I want to try something completely different, but I want your guy's opinion on this.

My gut says to pull a Koopaul and create a sprite project centering around an pre-existing IP (which is A: Not Obvious and B: What everyone can agree on), or go with something more origional, ala Project Prisim (by that I mean expanding on Koopaul's suggestion, creating a super-fast saurian warrior who can shoot lasers).
