LIKE CAVE STORY ONLY BETTER
#46
It really emulates the style of Famicom-era platformers in gameplay, though. The art style made Cave Story popular, but the gameplay made it good.

and part of that is because of the aesthetic, because of the visual representation of its core ideas; gameplay is nothing without its corresponding visual element. The graphics are just as responsible for conveying the feel of the game as the "gameplay" concepts are.
#48
that's true, which is why the graphic style is very much the same for the 3D version even though it's not literally the same

we're not at a point where we can say that, yet. we haven't seen the character "in action" or anything "real" from the game thus far.

Cave Story 3D will have some beta elements not in the original PC version. I would link to Unseen64's article about Cave Story beta, except they're currently down due to server configuring.

I hope this helps a bit.

I'm still not convinced to get it. I mean actually putting in the beta elements is nice and all, but what about other features?

WiiWare had curly, maybe throw in that feature and make a co-op mode for the 3ds version? I'd get it just for that.

oh, must have skipped over that then.

Heh, I might get it once I have the cash.

You know what might be a good idea? actually seeing all the plot holes plugged. I didn't realize until now that some things weren't really explained, like say how Quote originally met Misery (she implies that she met him during the migma wars, or something like that before fighting that robot thing), or how Curly ended up in the labrynth.

Maybe go a little more in depth with the story? would'nt hurt the game

how is a background element a plot hole. the game does explain itself, although not in a explicit way, but you get to deduce how the whole argument works. they even explain at some point what happened to ballos and why he's locked in a separated room on the island.

curly explains she went to kill the mimigas with the rest of the robots but decided to protect them instead. the rest of the robots end being completely wiped out by the island's core.

quote and curly were sent to stop the killer robots, they didn't change sides or anything

If I buy a 3DS, I'm definitely scoopin' this bad boy up. I loved Cave Story on the Wii, and you can argue that they might muff the art in the 3DS version up, but wasn't the Wii version a muffing of the PC one? I'll wait until we see more before I rage about it

The wii version at least kept the integrity of the original sprites.

Not like it was terribly bad anyways, the 3-D takes away the charm the original game had.

Yeah true that, but who knows, the design might be different, but it might have it's own unique charm to it. Plus, the gameplay in Cave Story was excellent, we really don't see many games like that (not since Metroid or Castlevania), so this new 3D iteration might become popular and inspire a slew of great games (or a rash of shit)

I'd rather have a complete re-interpretation of the graphics than just playing the original with double the resolution (which on normal LCD screens you can't really tell much anyway)

If they look like the way they do on the concept art, that will take away the pixel-ish look of the original game, yes, but it'll add so much more to the serious and lonely atmosphere that Cave Story have and is a pretty important thing on most Metroid games, which were the main inspiration for Cave Story. It's not like anyone was complaining that Metroid: Zero Mission didn't have the graphical limitations of the original Metroid or the lack of the strong "lonely" atmosphere that almost every game after the original started having.
