Apples grew on the tree, Morton escaped, and Princess Toadstool was kidnapped by Roy. Mario told the player to look for a switch in the hotel (but found too many toasters later) and ran to Roy's hotel. They did nothing to the tree.
Mario put a 'condemned' sign on Roy's hotel, and Toadstool was sucked into a Warp Pipe that she was standing on. Luigi asked Mario if he brought a light, and Mario said, "No." Luigi told Mario that a Koopa would lend them his light if they persuade him. The Koopa isn't in the game. Audio for a beta cutscene after Roy's hotel is on the disc. There's an explosion at the beginning of the cutscene, so they were going to make the hotel explode but changed it to having a sign on it.
