Help needed on ripping and converting .tex and .dss RE Engine files to .pngs
#1
Question
I've been curious about trying to extract the sprites from Street Fighter 6 for quite a while since it's release. I'm using the PC version, although I do also play the PS4 version.

Previously, I used RETool to extract the .pkg, and found hundreds of .tex files inside that may have textures for models, or in-game graphics in some of them (which I'm actually trying to find and extract) along with .dds files.

I've already seen a user on the MUGEN Fighters Guild extract the game's in-battle UI graphics... but as the .tex and .dds files couldn't be read by my laptop in some way, I'll need help on how to extract the other graphics/textures with the proper tools (like the gallery and character story/comic art) and convert the files to .pngs.

Does anyone involved have any ideas to help me with this?

.DDS is an image format and should be supported by GIMP.
.TEX I'm unsure of, but research says it's likely a text file. Try forcing it to open in Notepad or Notepad++.

When i opened the .tex files in Notepad, there was lots of garbled text inside them, so I don't think .tex files would work in Notepad... but when i tried converting them using RETool, some of the .tex files had more than one texture inside, which would not had properly converted them. And when I opened the converted files in Gimp, it however dosen't open the .dds files properly and gives me an error message!

What does the error message say?

The message says: "Opening '[filename]' failed: Unknown file type.", so I'd don't think that Gimp could open the .dds files I extracted from SF6 and other games that use the RE Engine...

Other types of files that I extracted from the game's pkg aside from .dds and .tex included .mov, .user, .motbank, .mdf, .jcns, .pfb, .scn, .msg, .chain, .mcmlist, .motfsm2, .mot, .mcol, .efx (for visual effects), .mesh (for in-game models), .mp4 (for pre-rendered movies), .bnk (for BGM, sounds and voice banks), .mdf2, and others.

Any other tools that could help me in opening/extracting/converting files from RE Engine games?

there's a noesis script for that

it's intended for ripping the game's models, but i see no reason why it wouldn't work for ui & other sprites?

The script you've provided is useful for in-game model & texture extraction, but not for the sprites...

There's got to be a way to extract the sprites from SF6, if only there were any other tools or methods around.  As a reminder, what I've been trying to grab is the story artwork from the Arcade Mode in Fighting Ground, for example.

All these were taken from screenshots that I took while playing the game. It's also worth noting that each character's story artwork in Arcade Mode is made by a different Capcom illustrator. The first one (by Hiroaki Hashimoto) is from Luke's story, the second (by Bengus, who also illustrated all of the character story art in Street Fighter V) is from Ryu's, and the third (by Shinkiro) is from Rashid's story (as Ryu was his final opponent there).
