Not sure why. Maybe it doesn't use the NES colors? It seems pretty readable otherwise. I guess it's because it's very simple.

You might have to add 1 or 2 more colors to each sprite if you're aiming for NES style sprites

It does use the NES colors

Yeah, that would make it better, but the NES can only use 3 colors per sprite

That's not entirely true. While the 3 color limitation does exist, it is only per sprite tile (on the NES these tiles take up an 8 pixel by 8 pixel area), and some games assign different palettes to different tiles. For example, Mega Man's sprite in the NES games uses five colors: one skin tone, two different shades of blue for his outfit, a white color for his eyes, and a black color for his outline and pupils. In fact, the outline and pupils are assigned to separate colors, so technically Mega Man's sprite has six colors. (Notice how when Mega Man charges his Buster in 4-6, his outline changes color but his pupils don't.)  This is because his face is a separate tile from his body, and thus can use a different palette, which not only explains the six colors, but also the two separate shades of black.
