HKX Conversion

Hello i have been researching the animations for the newer sonic games and noticed that all the animations and skeletons are in HKX i have tried a few methods to try and convert them into different file formats so the can be read in 3ds max 2016 so i could get a closer look for reference for college work im doing however all have failed unfortunately. Could someone possibly give me a few pointers as to what i might be doing wrong if so it would be greatly appreciated.
