Moral Questions on ISOs and Posting Linking to Other Forums
#1
So, I’ve got a question that’s been bugging me for some time now. I know somebody who have looked for ISOs that have been uploaded from various sites so that he can extract the various sound effects from it. I have the disks to some of the games I want to extract the sounds from: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2002) for the PS2 and Gamecube, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the Mac and Xbox 360, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II for PC and Xbox 360, and Star Wars: Battlefront (2004) for PC. There are some sound files I want to extract from these games, but I have no idea where the sounds are and how to extract them; and there are other games I want to extract their sounds from but I have no access to: Kinect Star Wars and Star Wars: Obi-Wan.

A YouTuber named “Star Wars Video Game Sounds” had collected numerous sound effects from various games. Although he will no longer continue extracting sounds for others, there are some sounds from certain games that are not only what I want, but what others want as well. Thing is I want to get the files from the console games, but I don’t know how to get the computer to read the disks and their files in the cheapest way possible. However, I would like to do it legally too, which leads me to ask: should I look for ISOs for games I don’t have online, and if so how to extract their contents and rip the sounds?

The other part of this thread I wanted to address is that I found some links to valuable information that might help me—or others if they choose to—in extracting the sounds, but they are on the XeNTaX forum, which could be a problem here. If there are others who would be willing to help me get the sounds, I’m not sure if it would be okay to post the links up onto my thread for others to see because it could very well be against the rules here.

I need answers here. The best answers if possible.

To know if something is against the rules, a good tactic is reading the rules. There is a link to them near the search bar at the top-right. Linking to XeNTaX specifically is fine, we do this all the time as it often has info on ripping games.

As for ROMs and ISOs, technically downloading them is illegal (and we don't allow linking to sites hosting them nor instructions on getting them). However, a lot of people do use them since it's often necessary for ripping from console games. Morally, this is usually seen as fine if you own the game. If you don't own it, then it can get a bit shady. Most of the time, especially if the game is relatively old (e.g. a GBC or Genesis game) then getting a ROM just to rip from it is generally regarded as fine as well. Not owning the game and downloading a ROM to play it... well that's a different matter.

In any case, when downloading ROMs or ISOs be careful, and be aware that you're doing so at your own risk.

(I'm not completely caught up on ROM/ISO laws so if anybody notices that any of this is inaccurate/wrong please do correct me.)

Thank you, puggsoy. I asked because I had links to certain parts of XeNTaX that may be able to rip some parts of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Kinect Star Wars, namely their sound effects.

I'd just like to point out that puggsoy's line about reading the rules was a subtle clue to read the rules (and not just about linking to other forums). Your intro thread and this one are both request threads which, once you read over all of the rules, you'll realize aren't allowed in the way you're posting them. I'll leave this open for now so you can reply once you understand what I'm talking about but I do recommend you do that before you continue posting. The rest of puggsoy's advice is spot on as well so keep that in mind before making any further requests if and when you're allowed to do so.

Ah, my apologies. Yes, I will wait for a month, post some small talk to pass the time, then I think I can work something out on the matter on the sound effects from the games. Does this sound reasonable with you, sir/ma’am?

That depends. Joining with the express purpose of requesting something and then disappearing is frowned upon here and will likely result in your request being ignored, even if you meet the requirements. People are much more happy to help you if you make an effort to get to know the community and participate instead of just get your requisite 20 posts and move on. Just keep that in mind but, otherwise, that sounds fine.

Of course, I will get to know everybody here a bit better!  Wink

Truth be told, I’m a bit nervous around here, not knowing everybody around here. I’ve talked to the user of “Star Wars Video Game Sounds,” whom I will not his identity here out of respect out of him. I was disappointed to hear that he wouldn’t help me with the sounds of Kinect Star Wars and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, to which I can greatly understand his reasons, even if I feel they were a bit unfair to the rest of the community of Star Wars fans.

I don’t have much to say on my mind, really. I guess, from what you said, I should practice talking on forums more often, spread a few of my ideas around, open myself up to people more. From what I saw of the user of the YouTube page, he would just go to get the information for the sound effects ripping and be done with it. I’m going to try to not repeat that mistake. I’d ask him to let me in on some of the secrets he worked on, maybe tell me in detail the files he has to work with and the methods. I could have helped him greatly. Still, if he wants to move on, I’ll let him.
