Help Ripping Sprites From a PSP Game
#1
Hello everyone.

I have an IMG file which I extracted from a PSP game.  It contains the sprites and other graphics that I'm looking for.
The problem is that I don't know how to open, or even view, this IMG file.
Can somebody please help me?

If anybody wishes to help, I can upload one of the IMG files here for you to inspect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time. Big Grin

What game? IMG is a generic name for a huge quantity of different formats.

You're part of me, it's so easy to see the simple truth

The game is called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jan.  Would you like me to send you one of the IMGs?

Before I tried extracting the files from this game I had no idea that there were so many different variations of IMG. Tongue

Hmm, I'm able to get an image out of them in TiledGGD after a quick inspection, but I'm not sure on what settings to use. This is as close as I can get.

It looks to me like there's issues with the palette here, but I've not played the game to be sure.

Alright, this is a excellent start.  Thanks!

And in answer to your question, yes, there's something wrong with the pallete.  It shouldn't have such a heavy yellow filter.
It should look like this:

I'm trying to use TiledGGD now, but I just can't wrap my head around what I need to do to make the image appear.  All I get is a cluster of pixels.
Is it just a bunch of trial and error?

The settings I used to produce the image I got can be seen on the right of the image I uploaded.

In terms of using the application, I believe there's a tutorial on the Google download page with basic instructions.

edit:
GOT IT

And for good measure, here's that previous image:

Magnificent!

Do you know if these setting (except for the panel size) will work on the other IMG files?
I'm talking about the ones that aren't in the OGALLERY category, such as RENA01.IMG.

I found the tutorial you mentioned and am reading it now. Thanks.

I believe so, though palette is in a slightly different place. But near those. It'll seem obvious when shifting the palette.

Alright, I'll play around with it later when I have some time.

Thank you.

EDIT:

Ugh!  I'm sorry, but I just can't for the life of me understand this program, or the tutorial at all!
It seems that no matter what I do, I always get this tiled effect, on top of everything looking terrible.
The primary problem is that I don't understand what a lot of these functions actually do, aside from the obvious ones like Height, Width and Colour Order.

Hit B until the "Format:" on the right side reads "8 bits/pixel".

On top of that, I'd suggest starting with the gallery images until you understand the application a little better.
The IMG format seems to contain multiple images, and will require you to navigate the file a bit more in both palette and image.

Do you have Skype? I wouldn't mind helping out over voice chat, it's always a little easier to explain stuff that way.

From what I've gathered, a number of the gallery images use the same settings as the ones you've posted. It's the other categories that seem to elude me.

Yes, I have Skype. I'll PM my contact.

For anyone that might read this topic in the future looking for answers:

We've concluded that the character animations are compressed. Within the "charactername##.IMG" files are a number of .pak and .mot files, which don't display easily. You'd need to dedicate a fair volume of time to uncompress these files to gain access to the images.

Saying that, gallery images, ending screens, some text elements, and backgrounds are all visible through TiledGGD and I'd imagine if you know what you're doing, creating a converter would be relatively easy, but probably not worth your time considering how simple a process ripping with TiledGGD is.

Install winrar.
Right click iso.
Click extract to a folder.
Look on the wiki for info on texter on the PSP page.
Run that on the large file in there.
Convert the gim files that result into png.
Have fun combining the thousands of images together.

If you need help, I am happy to chat on Skype with you.

I've done this method for FF4 PSP, because I wanted to rip the missing graphics, and got 3 folders, two of which had pac1.bin files, and the last with a pac2.bin file.  Using TextER didn't work.  I wanted to try it for FF2 PSP too, since no one ripped the character graphics from there......
