Thanks for the feedback. I tried to be a bit more color conscious on my new one.

Well, it's a step in the right direction, but you're still using far too many colors.

[Image: samurai_critique_by_dragondeplatino-d82jy4v.png]

1. If you look at the first samurai, there are way too many colors in his palette. There are a lot of similar skin colors and 4 really similar shades of red all used for just his hair. Not to mention, there are way more blues and grays than you'd ever be able to use for this sprite.
2. In the second step I changed the image to indexed color and pasted a lot of colors over each other to eliminate them. You don't need four different shades of red for his hair, because you can reuse your brown to shade it and the skin color for it's highlights. In pixel art this is called "hue-shifting".
3. In the third sprite I took the palette and organized it in a much neater manner. Notice how when there are a lot less colors, it's easy to arrange them in a palette? That way, you don't have to keep going into your color editor to make new colors.
4. In the last image I altered your palette a bit. Gray is a very dull color you want to avoid using, so I made the sword have sleek blue shading to it. I also desaturated the shades while making the highlights brighter. I did not touch the sprite itself, though, as I already gave some tips in my last post for how to improve on that.

Ah. Crap. And I really liked that one.
I was trying to shift the colors in the blade to give it the illusion of having a slight curve.

I'll try a little harder the with palette on tonight's project. (I'm thinking pirate.)

I really tried to limit the palette on this one but I really prefer more colors and subtle shifts.
I don't feel very good about this one.

The way you color might be fine and dandy for drawing and painting like normal, but in the world of pixel art, the rules are actually quite different.

You see, creating effective sprites means using a limited palette of sorts to create this kind of unity that doesn't make the sprite look blurred or messy. Sure, your way makes the sprite look nice at a zoomed in view, but sprites are generally observed at 100% scale.

Actually, I really like the new sprites. They feel quite unique and a step up from the previous attempts. Personal opinion is just that, though.

Alright. Inspired by Midi's muscle cow, I tried Major Armstrong using a Guilty Gear color palette.

you have future but there are some things that need polishment. I'll be sure to drop a more insightful thing when I'm home, but Armstrong's hair looks like part of his head, you should contrast it more.

Yeah. I really didn't know how to pull off his twig and mustache at that size.

This might go against your desire to use the actual Guilty Gear palette, but how about altering the hair, so that it looks darker?

I tried a few more versions for Armstrong's Twig and 'Stache and could get anything I was really happy with. He's a giant in the anime. I messed up by making him that small.
(I am really bad at hair anyway. )

Hre's the newest. Gintoki from Gintama.

Oh look, it's Mario and- EUGH! That...that really caught me by surprise. XD

I'm really liking the Mario! The beady eyes make him look a little odd, but for the tone of the piece I think the design works. My main complaint here would be his body, though. It's only slightly wider than his thighs when it should be almost twice as wide. But...I guess it would work for the style you're going for.

On another note, nice color usage! I can definitely see the improvement here with your palette! You're shaping up to be a pretty fast learner.

Just assume anything I do right was luck. Mario is my quickest project to date by far.

Tonight's took a quite a while because I couldn't quite decide what it was going to be for a while. But I ended up liking the final character. I may tweak him a bit more and try some animations.

My first attempt at an animation. I plan to do a lightning whip or something similar. I cheated a bit and looked at Castlevania sprites b/c I had no idea what kind of form would be used for a whip.

But got lazy and did an energy blast for now.
