New forum feature! [blackout] Tags
#1
Hi, everyone!

I've added a new secondary spoiler feature specifically for text that should help make posts more readable.
It's called the Blackout Spoiler, and it's used in the same way that the spoiler tag is but doesn't add the hide/reveal box to your posts.

This way, you can spoil just a few words without having your posts end up looking
like this.

Spoiler:If you can see this, it's working!
(Highlight the text to read it)

The blackout tag can be used anywhere in a sentence and doesn't have to be on its own line or anything.
Want Spoiler:to blackout Spoiler:every other Spoiler:word? That Spoiler:works!
Spoiler:(Just don't go overboard with it, please.)

To use the blackout feature, all you do is add your text between [ blackout ] tags, like so:
Code:
[blackout]Text[/blackout]

Also, I should note that Spoiler:links will still show up so if you want to post links using this, be sure to change their name so the url does not show up.
This is actually an intended function so that people won't accidentally click on blacked out links in posts, so just be sure that if you're going to post a link that the text doesn't allude to what it may be.

Spoiler:Also, emoticons and images aren't blacked out either. This feature applies only to text. Sad

As an added bonus I also added an additional feature specifically to the GoMobile skin to make this work on phones. Because highlighting doesn't work on touchscreens, I've made it so that blacked out text can be revealed on the mobile skin by clicking on it, which will turn all blacked out text within the clicked set of tags white.
While you will have to click on each set of tags individually, this allows you to pick specifically what you want to reveal without having the entire post be revealed at once.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them here. Give it a try!
Also, if you have suggestions for a better name than Blackout Spoiler or a better tag, feel free to post that as well.

This feature does not work in my Blackberry device because it doesnt change the text color when selecting. However its a nice addition for better constructed posts.

Is your blackberry a touchscreen or does it use the trackball?
Can you tell me what happens when you click on the text?
Also, this is probably a dumb question, but are you doing it on the mobile skin? That feature only applies to that skin, so if you're on one of the other skins it won't work whether you're on a mobile device or not.

it's a touchscreen tablet.

It uses the default normal skin so should it work or not?

No, it won't work on the default VG Resource skin.
The click feature only applies specifically to the mobile skin.

WHOOPS nevermind I made it work on all the skins and not just GoMobile.
You can either click-to-reveal or highlight, whichever works for you.

Interesting.
I don't know what code is causing that to happen, but I know why it's happening.
Psychospacecow put the blackout tags around the entire spoiler box, rather than just the label or what's inside.

In other words, he did this
Code:
[blackout][spoiler]text[/spoiler][/blackout]
when it should be like this
Code:
[spoiler=[blackout]spoilername[/blackout]][blackout]text[/blackout][/spoiler]

The reason it's happening is because due to the way the feature works, it makes it so that anything between the tags is turned white when you click. Because he put the entire spoiler box inside the blackout tags, it counts you clicking on it to open it also as a click to turn all the text white. So on white skins, the text seems to disappear because it's turning white since the entire spoiler box counts as a clickable region for blackout.
In other words, if you want to blackout a spoiler, blackout the label and the content inside separately rather than trying to put the entire spoiler inside a single tag.

As far as fixing the issue goes, the spoiler function is actually a plugin rather than custom bbcode like my blackout code is and I don't even want to BEGIN trying to mess with that stuff, particularly because I don't want to break anything. Honestly though, I don't really consider it enough of an issue to bother doing anything about since it was due to incorrect tagging anyway.
