A few HD sprites by myself, intended for use in HDNes.

The Sega Master System emulator HiSMS (by Botrops), the NES emulator HDNES (by mkwong98), and the Gameboy emulator GB Enhanced (by Shonumi) are designed to make it possible to create HD remakes of your favorite 8-bit games.

As you play, the emulators rip the displayed graphics to image files that can be edited in Photoshop, at 2x or 4x the original resolution. The games still play exactly the same, but their graphics can be remade for HD. Music can also be replaced with higher-quality versions. This has already led to many interesting projects.

First video of the HD Super Mario Bros remix in progress. Art by Joao Victor G. Costa, implementation by Alex Douglas, video by GGuy. A lot of art's been done for the characters but mostly just the backgrounds are fully implemented so far.

Original designs by Joao Victor G. Costa. Some of this is impossible in HDNes but the general idea is coming across!

Shonumi's Game Boy Enhanced emulator project can replace graphics in Game Boy games.

A lot of them look good, but the videos sort of answered the question I was going to raise....what do they do when the sprites are destined to flicker palettes, like the Mario ? Blocks and when players take damage and flicker palettes. You get a series of flickering graphics. If they can resolve that somehow, then this would be even more amazing.

They should've worked with the All-Stars remake of SMB 1 though, lol. It was better in every regard compared to the classic NES version. Maybe an SNES emulator capable of much of the same would be their next goal.

EDIT: What the heck is up with Peach's face on that one screenshot?

Artwork for the flickering palettes in Super Mario Bros is already drawn and implemented, it's just that that particular video was taken with the wrong settings. And it's still being worked on anyway.
