Zelda 2 Remake: Shadow of Ruins ( Recruiting Spriters )
#1
Big Grin
Greetings VG Resourcers people. I am not a veteran forum poster so I am trying to make this post as legitimate as possible. I spend most of my time programming, not forum-ing. That being said: This game started development over 2 years ago. The idea behind it was to take Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and give it a remake that would:
  • Give the game a PS1 - SOTN look and feel
  • Really play up the story (and have it make more sense)
  • Have more and longer levels
  • Have more usable items
  • Make the game more fun and intuitive

I am looking for a few talented people to collaborate with me on this project.

I worked with a talented spriter (Jorges D. Fuentes) who helped me develop many of the levels and sprites as well as establish the story and style of the entire game. The game is built in GML (GameMaker) and the engine is mostly finished. What remains is
some level building and enemy & npc buiding/programming. Here is a video and some screens:

Thank you all.

oh my god OH MY GOD THIS LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE REALLY AMAZING

I'm sorry I don't really have much to say besides "uh wow this looks really promising, i'm eager to see the final product" but

yeah.

I REALLY like the use of the filters in the background to really give them life!

I'm a little confused though - the video says you need spriters, but your post makes it sound like you need programmers.
uh
which one is it?

(oh if you don't mind me being critical, would it be possible to give Link a cool, SoTN-esque idling animation with him breathing? He looks great, but that would just take it to the next level and make Link look completely, totally badass and I'd play the absolute heck out of this game)

I need spriters. I am the programmer / music arranger. Sorry if it's confusing.

I agree and I actually have the sprite built for that, I have just yet to implement it into the game.

LOL. I did get an icy reception at first because I posted in the wrong forum. As I said at the beginning, I'm not really a forum guy. I can delete that comment.

It's not a problem, just thought I'd point it out

We tend to give new posters a bit of a hard time, as many new posters are "fly-by members"
They pop in, expect us to give them something, and just leave.
which is exactly why we have the rules we do.
Dont take it personal, just how it is.

Anyway, I noticed in the video that link seems to only have the one sword move, you know, the forward stab?
Are you planning on expanding his moveset, or are you trying to stay faithful to the old style?

What you don't see in the video is the upthrust and downthrust. Both are currently fully functional. As far as sword moves, I am staying faithful to the original. That being said, the inclusion of bombs, boomerangs, megaton hammer, etc give Link quite an arsenal at his disposal.

This. Literally this.
The main reason for this is because there's people who just join the forums looking for a single sprite, who think that making full pixelart assets or ripping entire spritesheets are as easy as picking your nose to find a booger.

(it's not, and when you come for a thing, get it and leave, that makes people feel like they did a lot of work for virtually nothing, especially if nothing ever comes out of it)

Paralleling this to your work (programming) would basically be a guy who barges onto your forum begging you to make a basic game engine from scratch (eh just make a little man walk around and jump and shit u know the deal) and have it done in two months so he can finish the game before he goes back to school, with completely blatant disregard for obtaining the knowledge and resources for the project to move forward.

if this was a new poster on your forum, you'd probably be like "hey fuck off i dont even know you!!" because that's a big undertaking
but if the person posted more frequently, perhaps you'd change your attitude on him and find out he's really got a cool idea and a big dream just like you :]

and one last note: if it makes you feel better, the rules aren't because of talented YOU necessarily it's because DOZENS OF PEOPLE made everyone else look bad.
and bending the rules isn't that easy. ):

oh one more thing to be relevant

you mentioned you might be added new equipment for Link.
...uh, i'd think additional equipment would mechanically break the game (making dungeons way too easy to clear etc.).
I know you're well-set on making this a true remake (and that's cool!)
But, do you have any plans to make like, a Hero Mode where you up the difficulty a bit (modifying monsters' walk speeds or attack patterns), or add new sections to the dungeons to give them the same balance of difficulty? :0

idk, with the SoTN visuals it'd be cool as hell to give it a SoTN-esque difficulty at some point

There are still many options on the table, but I am making sure nothing breaks the game. I'm pretty good at balancing my games. Not sure if you played my CV2 remake, but perfect example. Also my FF6 Eternal Crystals rom hack had extreme difficulty, but the addition of awesome skills and items makes up for it.

If you need help with debugging or whatnot, I'd be glad to help. What version of GM are you using?

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I'm at a stand-still until I can get someone to assist with the sprites and tiles.

I'm using Studio 1.1.8... I can't go any higher than that.
