Things About Games You've Never Found Out About Until Later

That's pretty much what brought things to light for me. After I learned about that, I went back and did some research and found a shocking number of ways he tried to stifle development on a large number of first party games. Basically his attitude is that if he doesn't like it, it shouldn't exist. We're honestly extremely lucky that the Donkey Kong Country franchise is still around, because if he had his way the SNES titles never would have been released.

And things are only going to keep getting worse. His name has gotten so recognizable that he essentially has the purest form of clout in the company. People forget that all the games he worked on in the past became the way they are because of the decisions of a team of people. The problem is, and this does not apply just to Miyamoto but many other popular game directors (*cough* Kojima *cough* Sakurai *cough cough*), that the one individual tends to get all the credit for every game they work on, so in future projects they are given complete executive control without the producers taking into account that there were other people involved in the development decision making processes. That is exactly what happened to the 3DS Paper Mario; which resulted in him completely disregarding everyone else's opinions (including the fans!) and resulted in a much shoddier game than what we could have had (seriously, he didn't like partners?).

This happens all the time in the movie industry too; even more so in fact. Ever see a director who's older work you enjoy, but you can't understand why his latest work seems subpar? That's because normally a movie has to go through a number of producers and editors before it is released, which, unless you're unlucky and have stupid producers, often cuts out or fixes the stupid bullshit. But once a film director gets enough notoriety, producers put too much misplaced trust in the director's vision, allowing him to have full executive control over editing. Sometimes this can be a good thing, but quite often it can be very, very bad.

I'd say it's time for Miyamoto to retire. He had a good run, but he's starting to lose his touch. Of course, based on a little article I read on Zelda wiki, at least he now trusts Eiji Aonuma enough to no longer look over his shoulder when he does the Zelda games.

Suggesting he should retire would probably be going to far. I mean, we DO still get good games out of him, and he clearly loves what he does so I would hate to take that unbridled joy away from him. He simply needs to learn to listen to the suggestions of others and not try to control every aspect of the game development.

Miyamoto and Kojima have what I call Tarantino syndrome. Yes they can do great things but they need an editor, someone above them to make the final calls. It's almost as they have so much stuff exploding out their heads they can't direct it. Or that they see there vision as so perfect that any suggestion otherwise is wrong or that the audience simply doesn't 'get it.'

You know, I could relate to the Tarantino syndrome. No matter how talented you are, it just won't do you any good if your ideas are not tweaked enough for the layman to understand. That's why I feel that having at least another person work with you is worthwhile. Besides, how are you able to see your own flaws?

Ha ha, I was actually avoiding using the phrase, but "Tarantino Syndrome" is exactly the term I use to describe it. I think I probably picked that up from my sister, who is a huge movie buff.

That the reason why Mega Man 6 was the only Mega Man game I beat as a kid was because it was easy compared to the rest of the games.

Sonic R for Windows 98 doubles as an audio CD with what looks like the full soundtrack.

Edit: So does Sonic CD. Where the hell'd I put my other Sonic Windows discs...!

Sonic 3D Blast works as well, but everything is tagged to mirror the WWF Forcable Entry soundtrack for some reason. It's the 3D Blast music, though.

The secret rooms in Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are the most obvious ones for me, since I played the HELL out of those games.

Oh, and when I finally played Ocarina of Time 3D in French, I found out from that creepy Kokiri girl you get the saw from that there's a Kokiri proverb that says, "A Hylian that enters the forest is one Hylian less." Holy crap.

Or maybe it's because Hylians that enter the forest become Stalfos.

But her line gives off such a sinister vibe, which would be much better than dryly saying "Eyuh, them Hylian City folks become Stalfos once they enter them woods *spits some tobacco juice into a can 40 meters away*"

It's still pretty creepy in English with how nonchalant she is about the whole deal. She even teases you about your fate. "Will you, too?" The giggling doesn't help either.
