Zelda II Link Edit(animation provided)
#1
Hello again, tSR, long time no see.

Got a little out of touch with any type of spriting skill I may or may not have had. Since I have documented the movement mechanics behind Zelda II Adventure of Link, I figured I could update his side-scrolling sprite.

I came up with this animation:

His arm, hand, and sword seem a touch off. Can't quite place my finger on it.

You may be saying, "Why edits?"...
If you remember, I ripped Ken from SF 2010. My good friend came up with the awesome version of him on the right after I enlarged Ken 2x and cleaned up the lines years ago.

Now, I tried to match the style on a frame of Ken teleporting into the level...

It looks like shit to me, so I figured I would try out something a little bit easier. On the Link animation, I used a custom palette pulled from the 9-bit color display image floating on wikipedia. Other than that, you wouldn't believe how hard the legs were considering there are only 3 original frames and the legs are very ambiguous looking in-game.

Any suggestions on where to improve?

I'd say 20 colours are far to many for such a small sprite. The contrasts need work, too, the face barely has any and the other colours lack some as well. You could get rid of several in-between colours easily.
I'd suggest that you try to pick your own colours instead of taking several bad choices from an existing one.

As far as the animation goes, his hand changes between walking and standing for no reason and his arm in- and deflates. The sword becomes longer and shorter.

I haven't posted the update, but I fixed the arm, hand, and sword.

As far as the colors are concerned, any recommendations? I removed two colors thus far. I am thinking of trying to limit the number to Minish Cap which is about 15 colors for Link's sprite.
As far as palette colors themselves, I was never any good at choosing specific colors. I usually used one that someone else came up with or looked at the simulated colors for different bit systems that are on wikipedia and choosing from there.

Any pointers for the colors would be awesome.

no, 18 is still too much. (I fear this is more of a recolor/revamp than edit, but let's not go there yet)

the thing with your colors is that the less contrast you have, the more you'll need to make up for the readability, and that is not right. Take your avatar for example, as far as color goes: You can see the difference between red and dark red because they're really different compared to each other (that's what contrast is, difference between two shades). If you increase sontrast, you can ditch out many in-between colors and still have a visible sprite.

This contrast issue is also important for his face. Notice how everything is blurred and you can't even see his eyes without focusing a lot. This shouldn't be happening, his face must be really visible from the get go.

Ah! Sorry, brain wasn't registering the point the first time... Been awake too long. I'll leave you with the current progress on Link which is the 18 colors for now because I am about to pass-out and I have work today. I should be back in about 15ish hours with an update, hopefully looking alot better as well as some progress on Ken too.

I do get what you are talking about with contrast, it's just that ima pass out soon but figured you should see that the hand/arm was taken care of.

Damn, sorry, just now realized it is more of a revamp than an edit. Forgot that is frowned upon. Sorry about that.

This is really more of a recolor from what I can tell.

Al I can say about this is that it's barely readable given the number of colors you have chosen, which is kind of ridiculous in it's own right. If you still want to use these colors however my suggestion is to make a completely new sprite from scratch.

I made an edit to further explain what I meant about contrast, not the best example but you can learn a thing or two from this.

Thanks, man. I have to leave for work soon, but that was really helpful. I guess it is due to my limited abilities I couldn't pinpoint that sooner.

there is absolutely no reason at at to edit that horrible zelda 2 sprite into something more elaborated.

it would actually make more sense to fully redo the whole sprite into something new.

try playing castlevania, then come back and say that to our faces, and i mean castlevania I to the original Dracula X chronicles or at least until the third CV game, Zelda II is more easier than many of the old titles.
