Plane & Helicopter Sprites
#1
Video
I was viewing some Helicopter pics in the Internet and I can say: They are good. Making Helicopter sprites is good too, man.

When I was creating the sprite, I was thinking about how a LEGO 8-Bit game should look... And I took some real images to don't damage the quality of a helicopter, the people made some rare crappy things that doesn't look like a real aircraft, so I looked for real images. Presto! I made it! This helicopter looks like a image found in a Vector page or something.

Quote:NOTES:

-As the Sprite is a side view, the main rotor can't be rotated. It justs moves in a 4-Sprite animation: First with the complete rotor, second with the mid-size rotor, the third is empty (It's in the center), and the fourth comes back to the beginning.

-This sprite is pure custom. I've found some images in Google as ideas, and I think I'm satisfed with my Sprite. I've called it ''U.S. Police Helicopter''. My design looks like a real Heli!

-I'll not try to modify the colors in any Sprite of mine, but I'll accept any criticism Wink

-I will add more aircrafts later.

i wonder what kind of reference you used, because its the very first time i see an helicoper with such an odd landing gear, and desing in general. it doesnt seem to be inspired on any real helicopter but rather like a caricature of it(wich is also odd, considering your goal was to make something that actually looked like real aircraft)

also you should ALWAYS post and share your references, both for us to understand what you were trying to accomplish, and/or provide a better reference if needed.

I've aproximately got the landing gear from this:

PS: I'm making another Helicopter. I think it's a Tandem Rotor, but the idea can be changed.

[Mod Note] Please use spoiler tags for huge images next time.

The problem you have is that your change in design to the landing gear has made it functionally useless. If a helicopter had that sort of landing gear and tried to land, it would roll backwards. Notice how every set of landing gear in those images has a small, straight "tail" coming off the back? That stabilises the helicopter and stops it from rocking. Because yours curves upwards, you end up with something like a wheel, which will roll backwards due to the weight of the tail.

While it's fine to bring your own ideas and design into things, it helps to pay attention to how things actually work, and what they're for, particularly when gravity and balance are involved.
