Cube World - Pre-orders & Alpha access
#76
I went ahead and bought this last night. I ran the benchmark thing before buying with Afterburner open and GPU usage immediately shot from zero to 100% and then my graphics card started sounding like a jet engine
...but it handles 4xAA at max render distance at a smooth 60fps, so whatever.

edit- okay so I just played it and it's still happening
this game is extremely unoptimized, holy crap
I guess it's still an alpha but jeez

Currently waiting for registrations to be re-enabled so I can shell out some dollars for this.

How's the game so far?

I was pretty distracted by my graphics card IMMEDIATELY jumping to crazy temperatures to pay much attention but I fought a turtle and it kind of did way too much damage (while, if i was reading it correctly, I was doing less than 1 damage per hit)
It was like early minecraft in that I had no idea what I was doing and will likely need to see some sort of tutorial/help page to figure everything out so I just sort of ran around for a while
Definitely feels like an alpha release.

EXACTLY! Everything is so overpowered. The only way I've been able to get by so far is to fight easy things like Flies and Bats, and gather up a lot of Ginseng to make Ginseng Soup. You'll be doing this for quite some time...I reached Level 2 and am still having difficulty navigating the world without getting killed by something I'm unable to fight. The game has some serious balancing issues. At least exploring is actually rewarding though. I found a town today where you can rest in an inn and craft items. I got my hands on a nice new Iron Armor from the material I gathered and logged out.

There's also a serious problem with the respawn points. There are plenty of instances where you'll spawn, and there'll be enemies RIGHT THERE and spawn kill you. Also, if you take a single step into a new region and die there, it'll immediately put you at some spawn point in that region, even if you've never actually walked there before. I've got put in the middle of a lizardman territory so many times; fighting back is impossible, and you get utterly gangbanged. The only thing you can do is one in the direction of the nearest region and hope for the best. Once you get there and die, you'll spawn somewhere else in that same region. I can't even begin to count how many times my character has perished just from the sheer power from most of these enemies near the noob zones(?). Don't fuck with the Raccoons.

Hm, that's pretty much what I would have expected. I'm assuming the engine is stable? The few videos I've watched seemed to show solid hit detection and such, but it's hard to be sure without really playing it.

Did you ever manage to beat the turtle?

I fought a turtle, but haven't been able to defeat one yet. They're quite strong too. These are the enemies I remember being able to actually fight back against:

Spikeman (Hostile)
Fly
Bat (Certain ones can be OP though, I've had a certain Bat hit me for 80 damage)
The Radish Monsters
The Onion Monsters
Elf (They attack in a team though...so you have to do this pretty much near full health, or you'll die by one of them).

I did eventually kill the turtle, but as you can see in my second screenshot above, it took over half my HP and all of my MP to do.
That seems extremely unbalanced for what appeared to be a starting-level enemy.

I'm level... I think 57? And yeah, enemies need tweaking, but seriously, it's about fighting the right things and not just jumping in like you're superman. Utilize your abilities, get pets, and for god's sake, if you see a witch/wizard/thing with a staff, run the holy fuck away.
Tsunami Bomb - The Simple Truth
We could run away
Leave behind anything paper
Not knowing where we're going to stay
When there's no Mondays

You're part of me, it's so easy to see the simple truth
When I'm in your arms, I feel safe from harm and sorrow too
You're part of me, it's so easy to see the simple truth
But most of all, nothing couldn't be solved when I'm with you

Heh, sometimes they come at YOU like they're Superman...and most of the time, compared to you, they are XD. You can just be mining your own ores, when all of a sudden, a pack of Snout Beetles come and own you o.o.

Yeah, so do the right thing, and just simply run away...Try to avoid getting close to hostile enemies. I think that a lot of people are exaggerating about some of these issues, because seriously, I suck at games and I managed to get through it.

This game is really awesome, guys! It just takes a bit of cautious practice to get through the first few levels. Trust me, once you're rolling, it gets easier to level and get skills.

I found out the perfect thing to do yesterday. Maybe this will help Vipershark and the rest of you guys.

The absolute first thing you want to do is open your map and look for the town icon. Head there first. Get resources you see along the way to stockpile a bit, but the main goal is to get there right away. Then you want to search the town for an NPC with a speech bubble over their head like (...). Talk to them, and they should talk about some area and mark it on your map. THAT'S where you want to go next. Pretty much all the hostile enemies there are enemies you can handle. I haven't been able to fight the boss yet, but the regular enemies are no problem. This isn't an obvious thing to do (besides maybe heading to town), so a little indicator would've been nice...

Still think it needs some rebalancing though, or at least...have it so you spawn IN the noob area and not in some place where practically everything can kill you no sweat. Why's it gotta be like that? Challenge is one thing, but when you're completely unable to defend yourself...not cool.

I've just spent about 25 minutes messing around in the game. It's... Pretty cool, so far. I killed a couple of orks then got murdered by one of those turtles, then explored for a bit and ended up getting chased around a mountain by a homicidal elf. Heh.

Found some Ruins!

Can't wait til my friend and I play later. It'll be a lot more approachable with another person x3. This is the best quality I can get without the game slowing to a crawl and dropping too many frames. If only the window didn't have to be so damn large, and if the game was a bit more optimized. Voxels are difficult to optimize though...
