SAU: Ripping Assets from Commercial Games
#1
Link: no

SAU stands for [S]prite and [A]rchive [U]tility. SAU allows you to steal assets from commerical games for use in your project, if you dont care about legal issues or can get away with it. As a project, SAU targets mostly games with rich and quality assets, which can still be reused. SAU wont target Mario or Disney games, due to highly customized stylistics of their content.

SAU was started by me, SNV, to help homebrew community with high-quality game assets, as I'm tired of your rubbish amateur art. If you cant do pixel art or produce high quality sound effects, then please dont, as you'll create crap. Do what you can do best, like coding catchy gameplay or writing a good story. And remember - pros too reuse sprites[1].

The second goal of SAU project is to provide open source reference to game file formats. Modding scene in general is opossed to releasing any source code. Hope SAU will make greedy retards angry.

Our thanks should go to HexRays for their disassembler and Sp0Raw for presenting it to general public free of charge. Without them graphic formats of Stonekeep, Majesty and Divine Divinty wouldn't be here. Other generous people have published format specs and credited in respective fmt_*.c files. P2P networks were invaluable for purposes of obtaining free game copies, kudos to all people who share.

Have a nice day.

Ok, I'm going to step in here and say a few things that need to be said.

Quote:SAU allows you to steal assets from commerical games for use in your project, if you dont care about legal issues or can get away with it.

While tSR is legally a giant gray zone, we are not trying to cause legal issues, since you are claiming to be fully illegal we cannot support you doing this.

Uhhh lets take Zun, the creator and sole maker of most of the Touhou games. His Artwork isn't the best, he isn't going to take artwork from other people unless they are also in on making that project happen (like the Touhou Fighters that were released) but while people reuse sprites, it is highly encouraged by everyone to fully make your own content, if you are not a great spriter or artist, start asking around to build together a team, it may take a while but if you show enough interest in your own project, you'll get a team. Worse come to worse, you'll make your own art and be like Zun. If you don't like it then don't look at those games.

If by "greedy retards" you mean the other people that do the same as you to make money- then ok, do what you want, still prefer you not do it here.

If by "greedy retards" you mean the people who actually make the games you rip from- then get used to be dirt poor and possibly being thrown in jail due to legal issues surrounding the whole thing.

I do suggest keeping this closed, if Dazz wishes to do otherwise or add things to it, then so be it.

If you have issues with what I said to you then by all means, PM me.

Dazz obviously has final say here but I'd just like to add to the point that this site isn't trying to cause legal issues. To that end, I know he complies with requests to remove copyrighted material for whatever reason should the copyright owner contact him. On top of that, as far as I'm aware, the sprites provided on this site (and the resources provided on the other sites) remain legal as they are not being used for commercial works.

I can't really tell much about your project but if your goal is to make money, what your doing certainly isn't legal and therefore does not really fit with the goals of this site. If you are just trying to provide a way to make ripping sprites and other assets easier for those unfamiliar with the process, then kudos to you but you should really try to do so without insulting the talent already present here.

this doesn't even make sense

'yeah im gonna take a copyrighted compression algorithm made a company, decrypt it and make it open source'

you're taking something closed-source (for a reason) and making it open-source

you see, the modding scene is in general opposed to releasing any source code because of greedy retards like you who take on physically and legally impossible projects just for some scene cred and horn-tooting

you do realize that your project, intent on making several file formats and compression algorithms "open source" would cause any modding community you create tools for to be DMCA'd into high heaven, right?
like, do you have ANY concept of the legal system in regards to software development? like, at all? do you even know what a law is?

this isn't going to make you the geohot of gaming. this is digging your own grave.

this is a very interesting way of saying "we don't want to be raped in the ass by their legal team"
