So far just done the lineart and a bit of basic colouring, before I go any further. Where could I improve on the linart?

Well, add shading. Maybe add antialising.

maybe don't choose a lighter color for outline

The pink outline was just what I used to draw it in, dont know why Unsure it won't be staying that colour though

Try using a darker background, white is too contrasty to make out any detail
