A New tSR?
#31
The defense of keeping things in a form like being arranged by company is that it's easier. But to be honest, that's not the case.
It may be the case for yourself, as you only want things from specific developers. However, if you know what it is you're looking for, then you'll know what to search for if you don't already know the system it's on. There are games that cross company, too - Super Mario RPG, and Namco X Capcom instantly spring to mind. And hell, anybody know who made Pachinko Sexy Reaction? I sure as hell don't.
All I know is that it was on an arcade system.

Companies are also regularly changing these days - Taito being a part of Squaresoft which is now Square Enix after having joined with Enix being a very simple example of the markets large groups rapidly changing hands.

Yoder Wrote:Maybe keep the default listing by company (or allow people to choose how they want to see everything categorized). It'd be a monumental task filled with tons of research, but affixing each sheet with a a few simple searchable tags shouldn't be a problem.
From my previous example, Sonic CD's potential tags (taken from Wikipedia for sake of simplicity):
Title: Sonic the Hedgehog CD
Developer: Sega Corporation
Publisher: Sega
Designers:
Naoto Ohshima, Director
Kazuyuki Hoshino, Character Design
Platform: Sega CD, PC
Release Dates:
J: 09-23-93, 08-09-96
EU: 10-xx-93, 10-03-96
USA: 11-19-93, 09-26-96
Genre: Platformer
Ratings:
ESRB: K-A
VRC: GA

Problem is with doing that detailed stuff is that many many games have their developers uncredited (usually when I credit them I do like Sega/Aspect in my sheets for example and use a reliable source for the info) and might be a little too much. Professionalism is good but your idea even though it is good might be unsettling for the younger folks who just come and take a sheet of a character for a comic or a fangame.

However if used, I can see no problem.

I disagree with the sort by company/type. It would be better to sort by game by system.

If you sort by game by system, you'll be able to reduce the number of icons needed to be made. You'd just have to make game system icons, the individual game icons, and the individual game section icons (like for RPGs, you can have a party icon, an enemy/boss icon, a NPC icon, a backgrounds icon, etc... -- unless you want to keep the current game page arrangement of everything on one page <.<;; ).

As it stands now if I wanted the sheet of NES Pit from Kid Icarus, I'd have to go: Nintendo > Other > Other. With the by game by system sort, it would be: NES > Kid Icarus

As long as you know what platform and what game you want, you can find anything easily. You wouldn't need to know stuff like F-Zero GX was developed by Sega and produced by Nintendo. Though there is one sticking point: ports. Of course if certain games are just exact ports (no changes), you can just set up a simple redirect to the original game on the original platform. If it's an enhanced port or a total remake, then you can give it it's own page and not redirect to the original page.

I think Company is better. Like, what if you want to find say, a Goomba sprite, but you have no clue what system they are on (Work with me here, people!). However, you know he's from Mario, so that almost automatically leads you to the page that has them.

And, if you're only doing it because of text, than what is grouping by system gonna do? You'll still use the icons. And where would Custom Sprites go? Most people come here to find like Smash Bros. Sprites and stuff that are customed. If we got rid of them, there would be less people coming to the site.

My point is, you should at least be able to search by Company and System.
Still thinking of a new name.

You would search "Goomba" in the search bar, OR, you'd look it up on the internet...
If you know it's from Mario, and that's it, then you're not going to know which mario it's from anyway. And you could just search "Mario" and find all mario games like that...

What if you wanted to find Crackdown sprites (original, not the 360 one) and you just knew it was called Crackdown, and was on Genesis? You have no idea who made it.
Same case - You'd look it up, OR, you'd be able to find it.
Otherwise, you'd search "Crackdown"

Do I have to reitterate SEARCH SYSTEM one more time?

I'm gonna assume at least three more times, considering how hardheaded some of the people reading this, or not reading it apparently, are.

I think a search system is ultimately the one thing that would completely make tSR the best sprite site on the web. Not that it isn't already or anything, but it would make it way better.

While I do like it listed by company, I'd rather it be in systems and with a search bar rather than by company with no search bar.

I didn't say keep it the way it is! I just said add a Search-by-company kinda thing. (I have a tendancy to over-explain things...)
Still thinking of a new name.

@Yawakchary:
I do understand that all the information details may not be available.
The inclusion of this extra information wasn't for the sake fo extended credit-giving. In fact, users probably wouldn't see those specs. They are there as tags for searching the site. So if I only knew the release date of Sonic CD (and somehow didn't know the title, publisher, developer, etc...) I could still find it. being able to search by any one criteria is what will make tSR so much more accessible.

~~~~~~~~
Franchise tags might also be an idea. I know you already divide by major franchises, but I am referring to implementing it in the search feature.
As for customs (and since tSR only accepts customs of pre-established sprites), maybe there could be a checkbox beside the search field that you would click if you wanted customs included in the results.
There will be a basic search, and most likely an advanced search section, to refine where it will search.
There will be a Customs / Edited sprites section.
How many people would know the release date over the title, company, series ect.
Personally the most used tags for say Sonic CD would be
Sonic CD - Duh
Sega
Sonic Team
Mega CD
Sonic
What else would you need, bar the characters names, which you would add onto the end, i.e. Amy + Sonic CD, or Bgs + Sonic, or Sonic + Mega CD.
However can pages such as the Sonic CD page have tags or will it just be sheets?
And is anyone going to forget the game Sonic CD after all these examples?
Edit: I don't like the large outline, I also think the Resource could have a white outline.
Well "Sonic team" nobody will search. It'd give the results of searching Sonic.
Sonic CD has sonic in it...
I'm unsure on if we'll put publisher in details on the sections. It could be a chore for a lot of "other" games.
Haha. And I wouldn't put publisher in the details, who would really care? And if they do they would visit a gaming site.
Thanked by:
Screw the publishers. As Dazz already said, they change regularly, that means tags, and organizations would have to be changed regularly and confusingly, which would only lead to stress trying to find things. And some games you don't even know who the publisher or developer is. The new system should be changed just by console organization.
BTW, what about that video thing that was mentioned earlier? That could be a good idea, at least, if the videos are useful.
We should have like a Sprite animation forum! And also bring back Sprite Duels! BUT they should have to be kept track of.
If you want to sprite duel, just PM someone as you would anyway, and use the sprite discussion board for it...
