Pokemon, what happened to you?

However, you can't blame them for having new legendaries every generation, that's essentially reducing the number of Pokemon. What you CAN blame them for is exponentially increasing the number of Legendaries per generation.

Gen 1: 5
Gen 2: 6
Gen 3: 10 (One of which had 3 forms)
Gen 4: 13 (Two of which had 2 forms)

So yeah, the AMOUNT of Legendaries per game is constantly increasing. They should cool off on that a tad. What would be kind of cool is more UNIQUE Pokemon, kinda like the Red Gyrados. Basically, Pokemon you only meet once in the game, maybe a variation of an existing one, maybe a cool one you can only get once or in one way, but not necessarily a Legendary. One thing Pokemon lacks is good boss fight Pokemon. That's kind of due to the nature of the game, though, I suppose.

OH, and in comment to the song, it's a fun and funny song. But if he's really serious, then just play the classics and stop crying tears of nostalgia.

You know I just now remembered about the Legendary Birds? Man eff me. I need to find my Red version this is ridiculous.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous.

You're forgetting Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina in gen4.

So altogether, gen 4 introduces TWELVE new legendaries, two of which have multiple forms. If you count each form as a different pokemon, it brings it to a total of fourteen legendaries.

That's too fucking much for one game.
I personally think RBY had the best formula. The legendary trio, the one-of-a-kind boss pokemon, and the secret rare event pokemon.

I'll even be willing to extend this to gen2's legendary levels, as they included version-specific legendaries to the rby-inspired legendary lineup which is fine with me. (even though you can still catch both in both games, one is obviously the main legendary for each game.)

There's no reason to have more than that.

that and the Lati's in generation 3

Personally, the only legendaries I didn't exactly care for were the lot of them in generation 4.

In my opinion, Gen 1 and 2 had a pretty basic formula far as legends, Gen 3 expanded on it only a little by adding twin legends, a 3rd mascot legendary that followed up trio (pointing out that Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza count as a trio for those who don't know), and another event pokemon which in all honesty, I didn't really mind that. But when it came to the 4 generation now...

Well, it fucked things over with more some pretty useless legendaries that really could have been saved for gen 5. I can understand at least improving the legend formula a little like in the 3rd set of games but generation 4 over did it.

You're both forgetting Manaphy and Phione, so Gen 4 is actually 16, more than 3 times as much as Gen 1. And if you count forms as different Pokemon, there's an overall total of 40. So Gen 1 is only 1/8 of the total, when logically it should be about 1/4 since there are 4 gens.

I think new legendaries could be just deities of that region. Like folklore of that place. Kind of like Johto had the towers in Ecruteak witht he legends of them burning down and Ho-Oh creating the legendary dogs. Nothing like creating the earth or ruling all time and space, just legends of their region.

So? Why does it matter like there is too many Legendaries? It's not like you have to use them. God forbid they try to add some diversity within the legendary pokemon outside of RBY.

I just feel the term "legendary" has less meaning. There's nothing that makes the newer legendaries stick out. And I'm not saying diversity is bad, but there's a little thing called "going overboard".

I agree with Wes.

If all of a sudden the legendaries triple in size, become weaker, there are more than one of the same species in the same game, and you can breed them to get another legendary, they kinda just become normal Pokemon...

Everything about the new Legendaries has more meaning and much more to make them stand out than the originals did. What do we have in generation one? An Ice/Fire/Thunder bird. Woo hoo. Whats so special? What gives them meaning? They have no backstory other than being three birds you find in the game that represent a little element. Whoop-dee-doo. We also have Mewtwo and Mew, which were the only two legendaries who actually had some sort of value and meaning to them in the game.

What do we have in the fourth gen? We have the Legendary for nightmares. Holy shit what a wonderful idea, its a wonderful idea. We also have its counterpart, again, a wonderful, lovely idea. And interest continues because Darkria and Cresselia also have opposite typing. They put thought and consideration in actually trying to create a relationship between these two Pokemon that everyone could see. Two legendaries out of nowhere and they already have much more too them than any Legendary in the first two generation bar Mewtwo.

Yeah, the legendaries aren't "God" like, like they were int he first few generations. But we have pokemon like Arcues, Rayquaza etc that are meant to represent god like things, while many other pokemon are simply folklore. They aren't god like, it makes sense for them to seem less legendary than pokemon like Arcues.

Really, a lot of recent Legendaries are just marketing ploys or tie-ins to other Pokemon spin-offs, like Ranger and Mystery Dungeon. Lots of Legendaries become the focus of Pokemon movies. As for the tie-ins, take Manaphy, who actually DEBUTED in a spin-off game before Gen 4 was released. Then take Shaymin, who ended up being a big focus in a spin-off, granted after it's release.

In other words, the Legendaries are marketing gimmicks, and they try to draw people into events with them in order to get them. So they're just gonna make more and more until each game comes with 100 new Legendaries.
