Rewatching the footage, that Mario game looks reaaally dope. Also, it seems to be cartridge based, and they look pretty small (though larger than a 3DS cart). I wonder whether that entails any sort of graphical limitations.

Just wanted to address this.  This won't necessarily be the case because of cartridges themselves, but rather, just how much storage space a cartridge can have.  If they have like, a 100 GB cartridge for example, the graphics could be as good as the system itself can handle.  But if the cartridge is only like, 10 GB, corners will need to be cut to have enough space for everything else.  Think about it like early NES games like Zelda 1, which was very bland looking and had little cartridge space, compared to later NES games like Crystalis, which had more overworld detail, bigger sprites and more cartridge space.
