imo i'd say work on it until you literally get the message from Nintendo "hey, your game is too popular plz stop", but I don't have alot of experience in putting-up games so what do i know. I mean you see that one obviously-Naruto-and-or-Bleach MMO that i don't even know if it's official -- Pockie Ninja? I think it's called something else now which...yeah. Plus you mentioned getting no profit from it so idk.
Anyways, it hurts to see you lose motivation like that! If you need art stuff or something, I'm here. I can probably come up with locations or custom sprites or something.
It may be wild; but I kinda imagined Mario and crew as NPCs, and "humans" would be a class idk. I get too ambitious as well, lol.
