I gave 3 a try and it was good until I kept dying due to Phazon Overload bullshit. Those deaths feel totally random and unfair.

EDIT: After a little research, it's because those damn pirates throwing Phazon grenades at me, forcing me into Hyper Mode. It's still a potential insta-death and still bullshit. I finally got the first of two turrets down and I die because some fucker threw an insta-death grenade at me.

I'm done with the Metroid Prime series. I liked the first one, but 2 and 3 not so much. Give me Metroid 5.
