The combined effort it took to make all the clones likely could have been used for Ridley (a biiiiiiit of a stretch). Don't forget DLC time is infinite either. This is mainly Sakurai being Sakurai and nothing else.
I guess I'll just end my opinion off here.
Clones, and the reason behind entirely, are quite literally quantity vs quality. A small puff of pointlessness that makes it look like there's more to the already enormous roster when there really isn't. They may make it seem like nothing goes into a clone, but in reality, a lot more does than you probably think, and for what real gain when that time could have been allocated to possibly better stuff?
