I don't remember Sakurai saying he didn't want real guns becuase of violence. I thought it had to do with not fitting the fictional environment. It's a celebration of fiction, he doesn't want reality messing with it or whatever.

That's how I heard it, anyways.

From what I've read, it's that they view actual guns as being to violent.
