Hm? I like Mario Tennis GB(A), but I wouldn't call it part of the "Mario Universe" or anything. Even in that game, Mario (and the Mushroom Kingdom) were legend-like and not a normal thing at all.
Like I said before, the RPGs, Mario Kart and the latest Mario Party have always been doing a good job of using the Mario universe in a good way.
