As far as I know all ants have a flying 'variant' - it's to do with the breeding. The females will fly off to create new nest (though some might be flying males which breed with her... I forget it's been a long time since I learnt about ants).

I remember reading/hearing about flying ants ages ago, I recall the word "prince", so they may be the ants that breed with the queen.
