It is mainly there to make it easier for the uploaders to upload it before uploading to the site I guess, I'm not sure to be honest. It seemed like a left over from the older system on the site where they had a Square section before deciding to change it into consoles.
Some places rename the file to their own system like imgur, TinyPic and min.us anyway even if you followed that pattern so it can't be helped if you use them places to upload your sprites. Just providing where the game comes from and they go on your post when you submit is okay.
