BRRES Viewer giving "Not a valid BRRES file" error

Try opening your .brres file with BrawlBox, see if that helps. It doesn't support certain less-common filetypes, but the latest BrawlBox is more modern than the latest brresviewer.

Also maybe open it in Notepad or a hex editor and confirming that the first four letters are "bres"; if it's actually "serb", your flie is of the wrong endian-ness and I don't think there's an easy way to fix that.
