What if you were to use a base sprite then add stuff to it, like a human base, then add clothes, hair, etc?

Yes, because everyone can do excellent-quality sprites from scratch.

I would prefer a badly-made custom sprite to an edit/recolor. At least it shows that they put in some kind of effort.
