World of Warcraft is still pretty alive despite what people say. Its got some pretty low numbers, but that's more a product of the current expansion's garrison system which secludes people. Just go for the largest pop servers, and you'll find people.
I've been messing with Guild Wars 2 a bit recently. It is beautiful and pretty streamlined. The crafting system is all kinds of stupidly complicated, but the combat is fun and its free up until you reach expansion content if my understanding of the matter is correct.
