The common problem I have with knockback coding is forgetting to check collisions and ending up going through walls. Easily solved but makes for fun glitches in testing...
I find the square shape default makes an okay pixelated fire, but yeah, a lot of gm's default stuff doesnt look good next to pixel work in my opinion. My issues with knockback usually result from timers, and resetting them properly.
