It's probably the closest thing to the R/B/Y experience in the series - that's the entire premise the producer of the games had in mind "I wanted players old and new to return to their first experience" - X & Y tried to do too many new things all at once (including be easy) and it kinda fell flat on its face.
If that's what they were going for, then they failed, because it felt nothing like Gen I. The game was way too linear, and the experience kind of washed out compared to some of the previous entries, save for the story. That's the only thing Black and White really have going for theirself compared to the others (and the animated Pokemon/Trainers, and World Tournament from B/W 2).
I am going to kindly tell you your opinions suck and are wrong.

What honestly makes it any more linear than the other Pokemon games (especially X/Y, lol)? Sure in Gen I and Gen II have like... the ability to go slightly out of order on gym badges (and Gen IV's eastern half was just downright confusing and it's obvious there was a correct path because you got screwed any other path you took) and what difference does that really make to a playthrough? It gives you the option to come back to weaker gym and boringly wipe the floor with them after you spend hours grinding in a place you're not supposed to be yet. I've never understood people's hard-ons for non-linearity in older gens because it literally barely existed, if at all. Also you kind of contradict yourself there by saying that the story is the good thing about this Gen while complaining about "linearity". The reason for having a more controlled path is obviously there to make the story pieces fit together cohesively as you move from area to area. And I really appreciate there being a good in-depth story for once in a Pokemon game.

And here's where I turn into a giant fanboy and yell loudly about why Gen V is the best friggin' Gen since sliced Gen III and why I'm sad so many of you skipped it:
- The story is fleshed out and in depth and honestly a bit tearjerking for a Pokemon game! Team Plasma and N are such great antagonists, even if maybe the message behind them's a bit ham handed
- Your rivals have actual character arcs and development, instead of just being washed out stand-in representations of game mechanics (I'm lookin at your "friends" from X/Y, that's right)
- The music is fantastic and the addition of gym-specific remixes of the main gym tune is my favorite thing in BW2
- There were actual differences that meant anything between versions! One town and one area in B/W were different depending on whether you were playing Black or White, and BW2 introduced even more differing areas! (The fact that X/Y didn't keep up on those creative changes is a friggin tragedy. The ease of connectivity between games now means "game exclusives" are virtually pointless, so they really need to come up with more ways to distinguish between versions)
- And most importantly, the world actually feels lived in! The towns are all unique and nicely designed. All the gym leaders are all fleshed out and have reputations and relationships that are more than just "da strongest in town" (plus EVERY SINGLE GL comes out of their gym at one time or another). And their respective gyms all have a clear function and isn't just an element-themed puzzle house thrown into a town(one's a mine, one's an art gallery, one's an aircraft hangar). It actually feels like a real world now as opposed to crazy land of Pokemon battle people.

Guys I really like Gen V, you should play it.
