iirc so far the only sonic friend we've seen so far is tails, and that was in cutscenes only

This is starting to bug me a little.
Sonic friends that offer different gameplay is in no way a bad thing. SA1 and 2 with Sonic only (or even Sonic and Shadow only) would have been nowhere near as good as the whole packages. The times where it's been annoying are with non-playable friends (Hi, Marine!), and when the gameplay for the friend is poorly designed (Hi, Silver!)

And I think the theme this time is actually pretty good, considering the last 4 or so games with Vocal themes have sucked HORRIBLY. This has just the right amount of brightness and cheese that works with a Sonic game.

Right up there with Escape from the City and Can you Feel the Sunshine, IMO.
