I think the reason why Gen 2 is known as the sequel is because you can travel between both regions and not just travel around one. Show me officially were it says that Gen 2 takes place so many years after Gen 1. They are all Sequels just it's more noticeable with Gen 2 due to were you can travel to.

I still think that all games take place around the same time.
