It actually gave a more real idea of what a game should be. You never really see that in any sort of game. Because the villain always wants to achieve his goal before the hero stops him. But in most games, all the villain does is simply "Sitting on his ass waiting for the hero to come" which fucks up story itself.

Well most Zelda bosses are ancient sleeping beasts guarding sacred objects anyway. In OoT Ganondorf already took over Hyrule, he was then searching for Zelda who once revealed her identity was immediately captured as bait to draw Link to him so he could reunite the Triforce.

You could say Ganon's excuse for waiting is simply his desire for the Triforce piece you carry. It's like what the Wicked Witch of the West said: "These things need to be done delicately."
