Help Out a Newbie?

(If this is the incorrect forum for a post such as this, I apologize. Mods, feel free to move it if that is the case)

Hello all. I recently became a little intrigued by the idea of using sprites for video making. No, I'm not trying to make an indie game or anything, but rather short little animations. However I'm pretty confused as to where to get going.

As for software, I have GIMP for photo editing and Sony Vegas Pro for video editing. I also have a few miscellaneous audio programs, but I'm not quite sure if that's relevant to this.

Basically, a few things that I'm wondering:

How can I get them into my video editing software? I of course know how to import the files, but my thing is that most sprites I find are in huge sheets with a lot of them in there. What I don't know how to do is get just one of the sprites into my software so I may edit it as I wish. Any elaboration on that would be appreciated.

Are there any other programs I will need? I'd prefer to not have to get Adobe Flash or anything..

Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you for your time.
