try sketching with curved lines (yes I know you said to give a C+C other than that). It'll give an even more accurate representation of what you want to do and you don't need to spend time rounding the corners. It's not a problem if you're making estilized faces (like that goblin-thing you did) but most of the lines should curve a little more. The colored progress near the sketch is too blocky, so I can say that your technique isn't working.
