I personally think that SMRPG has better characters than any of the other RPG's and a great plot and characterization but I don't think the other's were bad with any of that either. The Paper Mario games never had the best plots ever or the best characters ever, but they were fun and had their own little personalities. The problem was, you could only see one character's personality at a time. RPG allowed multiple character to participate in the cutscenes and not just whatever party member you had out at the time.
I think the Mario & Luigi games are lame when it comes to character design. There's very few original characters in Mario & Luigi that are any good. The Paper Mario and RPG characters are miles ahead. And I really don't think the plots were that fantastic in them either. I mean, they were better than "Collect 8 of something!" over and over again, but like, they weren't anything to write home about.
And while I love RPG with all my heart, Super Paper Mario by far has the best characterization and story out of any Mario game yet. The villians are all surprisingly deep and so is Tippi. The story starts pretty cliche but eventually gets better by the fourth chapter and I really love the villians in that game and wish they would take that route with more of their titles.
As for the battle system, the Paper Mario battle system borrows a lot from RPG and I think they both work exceptionally well and love both. It's hard for me to pick between Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Mario RPG. Both are different in their own rights and are fun in most every aspect.
