I never make some custom sprite sheet, but just look some examples on this website, why need its? But sure you don't copy, and recoloring!
The shading is just like that:

S is shading, it's the position of the sun, what makes shade your texture, never put other place your shade...
Shade it's most like shadow, but with some effects...

If you don't know about those stuff, sorry, but it's the only possible...
Also, did you tried sometime use Paint.net, or Gimp for make sprites?
I recomend paint.net, it's free, it's easy too! Try it, don't get stick on MS paint!
I know what your are saying about the sun "lightsource". MS paint is the better and more simplistic program capable of many things, ideal for spriting.
