Man, I suppose I missed out with no obtaining Melee (My parents got me Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin as my first Gamecube games, and Melee's price never dropped low enough to warrant a purchase from me (fun fact: Brawl was actually cheaper than Melee at my Wal-Mart)). It was a great game, and I played it every day I could.
Then I got Brawl at launch, and it didn't matter anymore. Like, I didn't need to borrow Melee anymore. Brawl was the same thing Melee was, only with more new things, and characters I loved. (I already loved Mario and Zelda/Sheik from Melee, but they added Ike, ROB the Robot, Wario. Etc)
And while some people struggle with online play, me and my group of friends have been playing online just fine.
I've been playing Brawl for a year, and not a month goes by where I don't play it. It's not the best fighting game around, nor is it the best game around. But it's something I can sit down and play, and not get bored of. Yes, I over hyped its release too, but Brawl lived up to the hype for me. Moreso than a certain other fighting game featuring Yoda...>>.
On topic, Super Punch Out!! was released this week. Better or worse than the NES game?

Super Punch-Out is easier than the NES game. But the NES game is truer to boxing rules. In SPO, opponents cheat (use weapons like sticks and circus balls, and some kick). SPO also only has one three minute round per fight, and if time is up, you automatically lose. Some prefer the NES game just because of that. Ignoring that, it's truer to the arcade games than the NES games are.

brawl's a fighter and I, too really hate to admit it.
it's more like a hybrid between an adventure platformer/fighter. You can practice getting awesome at it by playing Mario games, not by Street Fighter.
It's kind of a gateway fighter for this generation, kinda like how Animal Crossing is a gateway game into...well, gaming itself.

Kosheh, does this mean that Brawl is...a casual fighting game? Oh god
Anyway, Punch-Out!! Wii looks pretty cool right now, I'll have to check it out when it's released.

Oh god Street Fighter requires memorization of calculus-style combos and serious hitbox study to win matches. Tekken requires knowledge of game physics to juggle and win. Dead or Alive/Virtua Fighter relies on...button-mash combinations and knowledge of stages to knock your opponent off/make bigger combos
Brawl has no combo system, no form of juggles, and the quickest way to KO your opponent is to steal the ledge they should be grabbing onto to recover
Smash's control system is loosely based on Kirby
Kirby games are known for their broad appeal to casual gamers and hardcore alike
So yeah, Brawl is a casual fighting game. Look at its roster: Mario, Link, Pikachu, Sonic...how could it NOT be targeting casuals?
(and if you're going to bring up Naruto: Clash of Ninja being a fighting game...no. No anime game is a legit fighter unless it's made by Capcom or Sammy)

I disagree on the combo and juggling thing.
"Combos" do exist in the Smash games and are even calculated in Training Mode. In Smash Bros. a combo is a sequence of attacks that is guaranteed (or very likely) to occur if the first attack hits the target.
Juggling obviously does exist in Smash Bros. too. Juggling is keeping your opponents in midair with successive hits. Which is a big thing in Smash Bros. games.
Smash Bros. obviously simplified these elements, but they do exist in their own way.
I wouldn't consider Smash Bros. "casual" but I don't know if I'd consider it "hardcore" either.
You see it all depends on your definition of what "casual" and "hardcore" means. Which has not been truly defined.
To me, "casual" means it appeals to people who don't play video games. A person who is not a dedicated player or doesn't play regularly. The games require little memorization of controls, and general knowledge. It is not required to learn the physics of the game because it has NO physics. Titles usually include: party, puzzle, minigames, and educational.
To me, "hardcore" means it appeals to people who do play video games. A person who is a dedicated player or plays regularly. The games require you to memorize the controls, and has things to learn about in the game as well as strategy. You have to have a good understanding of the physics to beat the game. Titles usually include: platform, adventure, RPG, shooters, and fighting.
Racing and sports can fall into either or.
This is how I see it.
No.
Smash Bros. is a casual beat-em-up. Not a fighter. End of.

Let's just say this.
People who get into competitive tournaments through Super Smash Bros are fucking stupid, and should play something that's actually competitive.
And no, this does not mean Mario Kart.
Holy fuuuuuuuck I can't wait for Punch Out!! guys. Hopefully, it doesn't pull a Wario Land Shake It, and sacrifice classic gaming for snazzy graphics...

Opinions opinions. Are we so narrow minded that every game has to be played a certain way in order to be taken seriously?

So you always have to try and be overly defensive for your beloved new generation Nintendo games by bashing everyone just because they think that Nintendo has seen better days.
In fact you have always been doing that whenever anyone says that Nintendo has been making extremely half-assed games lately. Which is true because Nintendo actually could make much better games in the past up until the Wii came out, and you act as if you believe Nintendo is the only Video game publisher in the world
Uh, they still can. They just refuse to.
