How to open/extract/convert .plb / .pl2 files?
#1
I'm trying to get the models from the first Psychonauts game using the Psychonauts/Doublefine explorer, but they're of course in a unique format that isn't easy to access. I know others have asked a few times but they never got any responses, and I haven't been able to find any help or answers anywhere else, and I'm close to tearing my hair out trying to figure it out. If anybody knows anything or can at least point me in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated. I had tried ninjaripper but the way it worked for me was very messy and simply annoying to use (and it didn't really grab what I was after), unless there's a better way that I don't yet know about, I don't really know how people are actually accessing the model files

I can't attach them directly as it won't allow me, so I hope a link to google drive will suffice, I put one of each into it using the model of Raz

I think the .pl2 file does not have 3d mesh.

I did try to get the 3d geomerty datas from the .plb file, but I did not find the UV vertices yet.

The Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin game has a following 8GB size archive file:
  PsychonautsInTheRhombusOfRuin-WindowsNoEditor.pak
but I did not find an unpacker for it.

Can you tell me what unpacker did you use?

I need to get more .plb sample files to test.

Today I have installed the Psychonauts version 1.04 - September 21, 2005
It has a 150 MB Psychonautsdata2.pkg file.

I got the .plb files using DoublefineExplorer, but PsychonautsExplorer also works with the old version of the game, you really only need to use the DoublefineExplorer for the patched steam version. It can open the .pkg file and you can access everything inside of it that way, including all the .plb files it uses

It is also actually very easy to extract the models for Rhombus of Ruin and 2, ueviewer is best used for that, but I already have them and wanted to try digging for the first game's models to mess with, but it's very difficult to figure out

I just tried using ninjaripper on it again using the main menu, but everything was in pieces, duplicated many times, and just an absolute mess, not really ideal for what I want to do. I've heard that 3D Ripper DX might work better, but I can't get it to work (I only have the steam version on pc, maybe that's why)

You know what, I made that mistake too and just remembered that it's not the .pkg file you want, it's the .ppf files in the WorkResource and PCLevelPackFiles that you'll find those files, that's on me Embarassed

(The references to the external textures are in the begin of the .plb files, but I did not find that which subobject uses which texture file.)

I have released the following program:
- 3D Object Converter v10.002 (Windows)

How to get the 3D Object Converter v10.002:
Download the 3D Object Converter from http://3doc.i3dconverter.com and install it or download and use the portable version (if you don’t have it yet).
(Or just use the Help/Check for updates... function to get the v10.002.)

Oh this works wonderfully! I'll just have to save an extra fifty for a license so I can save them all in one piece. Thanks for all your hard work!

I don't know if UV maps are intact with this program but it's perfectly fine if not, I'm happy just to have the models themselves (and maybe learn how to do it myself).

One thing I did notice with the help of this program is that every character's model looks proper except Dr. Loboto, who is somehow sideways, which is rather funny to me (and some of the campers have their right shoulder sunken in for some reason)

My program gets the 3d vertex datas without any modification.

Could you attach the Dr. Loboto sample file?

Sure thing, I still have no idea why it happens with him but aside from the wonky orientation of the model there's nothing wrong with him at least
