Thanks for the advice! The face is the hardest part for me to do. I tried to do the bloodshot eye thing, but it kept coming out all swollen-looking.

Do you think I should just make my own sprites from scratch?

yeah i guess theres a few rare situations where edits would be better than customs but

^I got the inspiration after seeing the Wart edit someone did for Bowser's M&L: SSS sprite.

I think I'm just gonna go custom with this, as well as remake the nose and eyes.
