I had a go at editing/making some tiles and here is what come out of it.

You could try other shapes besides squares. Some stages do that.
That Mock-Up is awesome, BTW.

Make a single square the size of your current 4 squares.

see how the tiles are not all the same size squares?
With all the same size tiles like that, given the colors, moving at Sonic-speeds would be headache inducing.
