Sprite Comic in The Works - 8-Bit Squirrel - 03-10-2009

Hey there everyone. I'm new here. I have some ideas for a sprite comic and I would like a few opinions. It's basically gonna be a bunch of famous video game characters teaming up to fight their corresponding villains.

Here's what I have so far:
Mario and Bowser
Link and Ganondorf
Sora and Xehanort
Kirby and the Nightmare Wizard (DeDeDe just isn't evil enough)
Samus and Mother Brain
Sonic and Dr. Eggman.
Pokemon Trainer (Diamond/Pearl) and Cyrus
Eliwood and Nergal (FE7 FTW!)

EDIT: Ok now that I've actually started I'm back. It has officially begun.

Please give your opinions make some suggestions (other than "kill yourself" and "stop").

Thanks

no.

no more horrible crossover sprite comics.

please.

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - GrooveMan.exe - 03-10-2009

No, please only post threads like this if you actually have something to show.

What's more, this is on the wrong board. I'll lock this, then move it to the Creativity board. PM me with your comic, and I'll unlock it.
And before you complain about that being a Catch-22; we can't tell you how to improve unless you actually have something to show us.

Thread reopened with actual evidence of a comic being started. Link containing comic samples added to first post.

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - Alpha Six - 03-15-2009

Oh god this looks terrible already

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - kyrtuck - 03-15-2009

Sprite mixing is never well recieved here buddy.

Sorry.

Not to be a defeatist, but you may want to stop right here.

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - 8-Bit Squirrel - 03-15-2009

Yeah I expected this feeback. Especially from Osiris. But...I'm not stopping. It's not like this is gonna be some full-fledged professional project. I'm doing it for fun. Just for fun. Maybe throw it into powerpoint or movie maker and throw it on YouTube. Hey, I needed something to do. So there's a small update in the first post.

And if you really hate it and think that it's terrible and you want to set me on fire for even considering this, then why is it worth your time for commenting?

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - Alpha Six - 03-15-2009

because we're telling you that it's bad and that will hopefully get you to make it better

unless the only thing you want people posting in here is praise (heh good luck with that) which won't help you improve and will only give you false encouragement

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - 8-Bit Squirrel - 03-15-2009

Well it kind of helps when you say what's wrong with it. Oh wait I'm getting a vision. Someone is going to post "Everything about it is wrong."

this is part 1 out of however many I make. It introduces the characters. Hopefully the comic can improve once I actually get the plot going. Criticism is good when I'm told what to change.

Sadistic Kirby. tee hee

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - Alpha Six - 03-15-2009

If someone just tells you "it's bad" and doesn't say what to fix, that means it's bad. In fact, if someone just says "it's bad," that's an even worse sign that you need to improve everything as a whole. Look at it honestly and tell me it looks good. If you really DO think that it looks good in its current state, then you need to recheck what the word "good" means.

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - Sol - 03-15-2009

I can't believe I actually looked through this, but if you want some specific criticism, here it is.

-Mixing sprite styles usually looks terrible, this comic is no different.

-The whole concept of video game crossover sprite comics is way overdone, and most people do it so badly that any potential readers are usually completely turned off by it.

-The speech bubbles (if you can even call them that) are eyesores, so is the font of the text.

-The whole black background in the first half of the comic or whatever is fucking stupid. It just seems like you were too lazy to find a background and used the excuse that the scene was pitch black, even though we can see the characters in the scene just fine. This makes no sense.

-Another thing I found lazy was the fact that after Dedede uses the "wormhole" his sprite in the next panel has him holding his mallet for no explained reason; you were too lazy to edit it out and even comment on it as though you were oblivious to it.

-If you're going to have characters swear in a comic, don't censor the swears, it doesn't make any sense as we obviously know that the character is swearing. If you don't want swearing in your comic, then don't put it in.

-The events don't seem to make sense. The presence of a "wormhole" is basically just an excuse for crossovers to take place, secondly, why would Dedede just dive into a strange glowing portal without even knowing what it was, how would he know Mario would be on the other side, how does he even know who Mario is, why would the wormhole lead here in the first place? Try using some exposition.

If you actually want people to read this, don't be lazy, don't cut corners. If you're not going to make an honest effort to create it why should anyone make an honest effort to read it.

Lastly: No one said this had to be a "full-fledged professional project." As a sprite comic that solely features other people's intellectual property with absolutely nothing custom made in the visual department, I don't see how it could ever be classified as such anyway. But that doesn't mean people don't expect a certain level of quality. Just because you're "just doing this for fun" doesn't give you an excuse for what you make to be of shoddy quality. I can make birdhouses just for fun, but that doesn't mean I'm just going to shrug my shoulders if they turn out to be complete shit.

Please take heed.

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - 8-Bit Squirrel - 03-16-2009

Ugh...listen I never even intended to post this thing here. I was originally had a few questions about some little things. I don't honestly give a fuck about your opinions. I'm gonna have this thread locked just because I don't really care anymore. And all that laziness you mentioned Sol, well I'll retort for the hell of it:

1. Yeah i get the speech bubbles and font. I might edit those.
2. DeDeDe is making the wormholes. Cause he's rounding up everyone. I didn't feel like explaining how he did.
3. The hammer was for humor.
4. He knew about Mario because he knows about the whole villain meetings. So he knows who is there and where they're from.
5. The background is supposed to make it ominous. It's cheap but I don't care.

And now you're saying "well you obviously don't want to put effort into it." IT'S FOR FUN. I'm gonna load it with cheap humor and post it...somewhere. Look, it's meant to be humorous without a viable explanation for everything.

RE: Sprite Comic in The Works - GrooveMan.exe - 03-16-2009

That's a pathetic excuse for not trying. You have to put effort into things for them to be funny, let alone approachable.

I don't know why I bothered trying to maintain this thread for you; way to waste my time.
