Etiquette of continuing a game's sprite submissions - Sperbus - 03-22-2024

So I want to get into sprite ripping, giving back to this amazing resource pool I often dip into. Right now, I'm really getting into a GBA game called Tomato Adventure, a JP exclusive Alphadream game that got fan translated in 2021. As this moment, there are quite a few quality sheets submitted by Solink already for it, but they're only up to the first main boss of the game and there is SO much more ground to cover. However, because of this, I've run into a couple moral dilemmas that I have no clue how the site handles:

  1. Solink's translation is different from the romhack translation by Unknown W. Brackets (found here). I believe they were submitted before the romhack was made. Not to say that there's a strictly right and wrong fan translation, but for the sake of consistency (like adding more sprites to Alesa, or Aretha as his translation calls her), it would be best to stick to one source, right?
  2. I would have organizational differences compared to Solink. For example, every enemy only has two sprites of animation, so for the sake of avoiding a million different sheets, I would organize each collection of enemy sprites by location, which would look strange sitting next to his single enemy sprite sheets.

I'm sure this isn't the first time there's been etiquette dilemmas like this, so I would love to know how it's been dealt with before. Should I reach out to Solink, get their permission to reorganize/rename their rips? Continue and work around what they've done? Any advice is much appreciated!

If you think Solink's sheets are complete and have a perfect quality, you can just edit his sheets together and credit him. This way, you can reorganize the game like you see fit.

And in case of two different translations, just write (for example)

Aretha / Alesa

for the icon description.

Btw if you want to delete old sheets or change the order of the subsections (playable characters, enemies, backgrounds, etc.), you can just use the report button at the top right (yellow triangle with an exclamation mark) -> visible in the main game section.
For everything else, you can use the revise button for individual sheets (looks the same) -> visible when clicking on a sheet icon.

Barack nailed it. Feel free to build off of any existing rips. It's a community effort! But if you use their rips, just keep their names in the credits of your sheet. Nbd.
For translations, we generally go with the most commonly accepted one. For example, everything in Mother 3 is named after the fan translation. If you're not sure, you can always include the "official" untranslated name and the translated one, just to be sure. Hope this helped!

Very succinct and timely responses! I'll be sure to credit Solink and get started on this. Thanks so much you two!  Big Grin
